Are we in the middle of or about to start a great era of boxing?
Looks like tons of big name fights have been made / are being made recently:

    James DeGale v Badou Jack
    Keith Thurman v Danny Garcia
    Gennady Golovkin v Daniel Jacobs
    Anthony Joshua v Wladimir Klitschko
Saul Alvarez v Julio Cesar Chavez Jr

    Coming up we have:
    Saul Alvarez v Gennady Golovkin
Andre Ward v Sergi Kovalev II

We have some great talent stepping up: Errol Spence, Terrence Crawford, Vasyl Lomachenko, Anthony Joshua, [Insert Other Names Here] - these guys are looking to put boxing back higher up in the public-consciousness and not just wth the hardcore base.

I can´t remember being so interested in boxing throughout multiple divisions for ages.....

Yes, and I already mentioned this in another thread. We seem to be starting another golden era.

I remember back in the mid 1990s we had Roy Jones Jr, Oscar De La Hoya, Felix Trinidad, Naseem Hamed, Lennox Lewis - to name the five I think were top-draw but it took a couple of years before any real matchups were made with these guys and their respective top opponents...i.e. King v Arum

One of those guys needs to become a global star. Because he's a heavyweight, Joshua probably has the best chance. AJ is already a superstar in the UK.

And also he has crushing KO power.
I doubt people are going to flock to Madison Square Garden to marvel at Lomachenko´s footwork, combinations or ring generalship.

None of the other guys - Spence, Loma, Crawford - have that X Factor....yet.
They all do everything really good.

Loma's gonna have to learn at least PASSABLE English in order to become a mainstream attraction.

I don't think Loma has a shot at becoming a superstar. Even if he mastered english more than Shakespeare

Or, Loma can fight in Europe. Anthony Joshua has no motive to fight in US perhaps ever in his career, the prices and audiences are much larger in Europe which is where all notable hw fights have been held for fifteen years. Other divisions will follow if the fighters are good enough

Joshua, Parker, Wilder and Ortiz may prove to be the fabulous 4 of the heavyweight division. Assuming Joshua comes out on top of that Tetrad, he'd be huge and will carry the sport on his shoulders.
This year is already bloody exciting no matter what else does or doesn't happen with two HUGE fights on the horizon: Canelo-GGG and Ward-Kovalev rematch. Both promise to be excellent fights with lots at stake.

I thought the Klit win would push him over the edge, but nobody in the US knows who AJ is. Which isn't really his fault at this point. Americans simply don't care about boxing like Brits do.

    Americans are myopic cunts.

Only sports that matter to the average American is baseball, Football and basketball. Only foods that matter are steaks and burgers (and tacos for those in the "border states"). I bet most Americans on this board have never even left the US.

I love Americans, don't get me wrong, but they are IGNORANT cunts. lol

If an American knocked klit out like that pre Fury it would be huge. HW's are for casuals and casual American fans don't care about euro athletes.

Definitely some truth to this. It's not about "xenophobia" or whatever nonsense. If Joshua hailed from Sometown USA instead of Watford, Hertfordshire there would have been a lot more attention from both the sports and mainstream media.

Joshua would be sitting on the couch next to Ellen and interviewed by Fallon or Colbert later the same day.

Don't think casual American sports fans care about anything other than American sports/athletes.

    Ignorant fucks.

Americans care about about American Football.... then there's a BIG gap before you get to basketball and baseball. I'm in the minority, I think football is boring as fuck.

I'd watch baseball ANYDAY over the NFL.

Makes sense. I've noticed that NFL players tend to win Dancing with the Stars for example. But I digress.

I don't understand what Joseph Parker has done to deserve a place in a new 'golden era',.. I would truly, truly, truly pick John Ruiz to beat him, with ABSOLUTE confidence.

Most of these guys are just names that haven't fought any of the new names yet so if people want to imagine him as an intriguing opponent I don't see the problem. That's what they're doing with the other guys anyway.

If the top Guys fight each other and keep fighting the top guys, win or lose, we'll have a good era of hw's. If not it's like HBO's "Night of the Young HW's" but on an international level.

I agree but Alvarez/Jr is not a good example. Horrible matchup.

Yeah it turned out that way but was the end result really expected to be that one-sided?

I don't think anyone was saying, "wow. Kudos to alvarez for making this fight. The best fighting the best."

Rather, they were saying, "well, alvarez will definitely have to fight ggg after this money-grab."

Timing is most interesting, but do tell me, how does one plant maize in 2006, suffer repeated crop failures, and get oceans of golden corn in 2017.

    You should work for Monsanto!!

alvarez vs chavez was a shitfest that no real boxing fans cared about. If it was prime chavez it would have been midly interesting, but Jr hasn't been a serious boxer for the last few years
