Well, officially anyway. Dunno how long it will actually last but if it is genuinely the end, this bloke is probably the greatest actor of my lifetime. Incredible talent.

    What a lazy cunt.

Anyways, saw him at least a couple of times up in Canastota, New York. Think he was buddies with Ken Buchanan or John Stracey or somebody similar.

Seemed nice enough. He never had bodyguards around him or anything, but nobody really approached him either, even though everybody knew who he was. Weird vibe he gave off I think.

I saw him at the fights in Turning Stone once in their old shitty ballroom. Some club fight card. He wasn't even ringside or anything. Was like 15 rows back with the rest of the commoners.

He does seem a little weird and crazy with the method acting. Like he'll take his character home with him and act like him and his children would ask their mom "what's wrong with dad?"

Supposedly he wanted to feel the struggles of being handicapped, so when he filmed My Left Foot, he refused to get out of the wheelchair to the point where he injured his rib. He also wanted to feel the pain of being a prisoner so when he filmed In the Name of the Father, he instructed fellow cast members to spit on him.

    Amazing actor though.

I can just picture him at home, in character, stealing ice cream from kids, saying "I.... DRINK.... YOUR.... MILKSHAKE!"

He's great in that, but I can't really choice his best performance. He's had so many great ones.

Paul Dano was excellent in that too.

07 had TWO movies that featured classic villains, TWBB and NCFOM.

What a quitter. He should play Victor Ortiz in his last movie role.

I can choose his worst: as Hawkeye in "The Last of the Mohicans". For some reason he sounded very fake and critics trashed his performance so much that a few even wondered how he got an Oscar for "My Left Foot" in the first place.

I love Last of the Mohicans.

.......and I certainly don't remember him getting trashed when it came out. Maybe by revisionist reviewers years after the movie came out, but not upon it's release.

yeah; his performance was pretty good as i remember. "i will find you" etc.

    - can't comment on the accent. when people try to imitate US regional accents it always sounds convincing to us non-Americans. if i ever go to boston i'll expect them all to be speaking like Good Will Hunting/Departed

I understand it's probably his least immersive role, and the closest he's ever come to making an "action" movie, but he did the job.

Besides, anybody who says they know what a "Mohican" accent sounds like, is a fuckin' liar. LOL!

........and if you ever do hear what you think is an actual Boston accent in a film, get ready for some New England asshole to correct you and tell you it sounds more like a Lowell or a Cape Cod accent. Likely those people are from Springfield and just general cunts anyways.

I love that film too and think Lewis did an okay job for a role that wasn't that much challenging except for the running parts. Wes Studi as Magua simply stole the movie. Another case of the villain being more fascinating than the hero. It wasn't a revisionist review, but from Time magazine, Entertaintment Weekly and others upon its release.

    EW quote:
"... Hawkeye barely seems in the movie: Day-Lewis has emptied him of the very tensions and conflicts that actors use to create characters."

    Wes Studi

Agree that Studi and also Russell Means were excellent in it.

Since when do actors officially retire? Wtf? As an actor, he can act as often as he wants, when he wants to. Why announce his retirement? Weird.

He's a headcase. Probably his way to try and get casting agents to leave him alone.

I wouldn't be surprised if certain directors have a bounty on his head, if a casting agent can convince him to work with them, or at least take a meeting.

Sean Connery and Gene Hackman are two actors who are officially retired, and have been for over 10 years now.

But they were in the late 70s when they officially announced retirement.

Jack Nicholson is basically retired, although I heard he's coming back for one last performance.

DDL is 60. I honestly didn't know he was that old. I thought he was in his 50s.

He probably had another 10-15 years of quality acting left, but hey, if wants to hang em up now it's totally his choice.

Obviously he is perfectly free to stop acting. Just seems odd that he's made a formal statement announcing it. Could be wrong but don't recall any of those guys you mentioned releasing some official statement they have retired. It is like he is saying: go ahead and celebrate my career because it is now officially over. No need to wait around seeing if I do anything else. I am retired.

Is better to retire at 60 and enjoy life and the fruits of decades of hard work. He might not want to end like Laurence Olivier who worked almost til the day he died at age 82, but by his 70's he was already becoming a senile, kept his mouth opening without him being aware of it and was suffering from poor memory problems. Per director John Badham, who directed Olivier as Van Helsing in 1979 'Dracula' (starring Frank Langella) it was truly sad to watch this legendary great going through those geriatric problems on the set. Badham will stop filming and tell him "Sir Laurence: you are doing it again!" about his jaw slowly droping and opening his mouth involuntarily. Olivier himself thanked Badham and asked him to remind him every time that occurred.
