I would have given it to Pavlik but don't have any complaints.

 

An argument can certainly be made for Pavlik, but Floyd did win the two biggest fights of the year: adding a 154lb belt and a victory over the true 140lb champion to his resume.

 

Add to that fact Floyd keeping his absolute, undisputed, true, linear welterweight championship of the world in 2007, despite not beating any welterweights! If that's not an impressive feat, I don't know what is!

You may not know this but Hatton was a Welterweight on the night when Floyd stopped him. Also Hatton is a former Welterweight titlist as well.

so you're saying hatton was not at his best at the weight and would have fared much better if the fight was at 140?

do you think this was a well-timed tactic by floyd to make sure he was not fighting a 100% hatton?

I would have pick PBF, Cotto and Pavlik in that order.

 

I think Pavlik deserved the nod here. Not because I hate PBF but because he beat Miranda and the undisputed undefeated Taylor in spectacular fashion! PBF is a great fighter but his win over a fading DHL is overrated.

 

De La Hoya is a very difficult person to beat for anyone under 154lbs. You underrate that achievment by Mayweather. As a Floyd fan I was VERY nervous about that fight. After seeing De La Hoya destroy Mayorga with ease I didn't know why Floyd was installed as such a clear favourite to win. Oscar (who is younger than Shane) is still a fast and very dangerous fighter.

 

It's a credible win no doubt, you just have to put in some perspective. Other than size, Oscar didn't have many advantages going into the fight. His punching power wasn't much considered because Mayweather is hard to hit clean, and everyone knew De La Hoya didn't have the stamina to keep throwing power punches all night. Not only is Oscar past his best, but his activity level has been way off in the last 4-5 years.

The Mayorga fight clearly wasn't going to prepare him for Floyd.

There are some pretty clear reasons Mayweather was a fairly big favorite.

I agree Delahoya is a very hard fighter to beat but he was far from his best Sly! You need to recognize that. It was a good win for PBF but a argument can be made for Pavlik.

 

Absolutely. I'm just pointing out that an aging Oscar didn't have many advantages in that fight and punching power wouldn't be much of a factor. Not only because Floyd is a defensive genius, but Oscar wouldn't be able to keep up the pace throwing power shots.

:warning: Well PBF doesn't bother me for getting it, If he would have cruised to a UD against Hatton i would have said that KElly deserved it 100% BUT since Floyd took hatton and KHTFO and closed the show he gets it.

 

At least 2007 had solid candidates (Pavlik, Cotto, Mayweather) with good years, as opposed to 2006.

2006's winner:

Manny Pacquiao: a guy whose three wins all came against guys coming off of losses, including one guy who jumped up two weight classes.

2006's other top candidates:

Floyd Mayweather: He beat Zab Judah coming off a loss, and a rather weak recognized champ in Carlos Baldomir.

Wladimir Klitschko: Chris Byrd and Calvin Brock.

 

agREED. Sly likes to pretend that DLH was at his very best in the Mayweather fight, but that's just not true. Mayweather vs. a prime 147 lb DLH is a much more difficult fight.

 

Pavlik gets my vote for FOTY.

 

I would have liked Calzaghe to have gotten the nod, though I would also have been happy for Pavlik to have won, but IMO Floyd winning for beating a semi-retired ODLH and a B-Level Welterweight in Hatton is unsatisfactory.

...though hardly a surprise, may I add.
