Worst Matchup in History for Floyd, Stylistically... Not Only is Hearns Taller, Looooooooooooonger and More Powerful, he's Probably FASTER w/his Hands...If Floyd Survived the 1st FLUSH Right Hand he Tasted, he'd Play it VERY Safe and Lose a Wiiiiiide UD... If Floyd Bites Down and Engages, as he Did Against N'Dou, Corley and Sugar Shane, he Gets KO'ed Late... If they Fought 10 Times, Floyd MIGHT Stink Out 1 Win, but Even That's DOUBTFUL...Thomas Hearns is All WRONG for Floyd Mayweather, Period... REED
Too much height and reeeeeeeeach for Floyd who IMO was not great at 147. If Floyd goes into a shell, he loses a wide UD. We all know what would happen if he bit down and stood in there with Hearns but he won't.
I agree with you. I've come to respect Floyd a lot as a fighter, and rate him very high historically - but no question Hearns is a TERRIBLE matchup for him. Floyd can handle punchers, he can handle fast fighters, he can also handle rangier fighters - but Hearns has all 3 in abundance, and an excellent jab and offensive skill, it would be too much for Floyd.
Word. Hearns is the worst possible stylistic matchup for Floyd. I think Floyd goes the distance but I can't see him winning more than 4 rounds
My thinking is this: Benitez went the distance with Hearns and so I see no reason why Floyd wouldn't especially considering that Floyd is at least as elusive as Benitez and and least as tough
I think Floyd lasts the distance but if he gets caught with similar punches that Cotto caught him with, no guarantee. Hearns via UD is my official prediction
Floyd May last the distance but it would come from him being in a defensive shell, focusing largely on surviving, and being even more selective with his punches than usual. Probably the worst matchup for Floyd at WW
me neither. Floyd would have to somehow get to Hearns body to try to slow him down so that he could get to him late but even that is very slim.
I think a come forward style the way Floyd did against Judah would be the only alternative but Leonard had to come through some fire to do that to get in those brutal body shots that IMO played a major role in weakening Hearns who weighed in at 145. If Floyd can do that, he'd have a chance but while Floyd has a dependable chin, I don't believe it's granite like. Plus, that's just a lot of fire power for any welterweight to come through. Other than Leonard, I think only Robinson could probably replicate that.
Floyd has an excellent chin - even at welter imo - but let's not forget Floyd is really a natural lightweight. Hearns hits so hard I can't imagine any lightweight size fighter taking his shots. Leonard was actually a pretty big solid welter with a great chin.
I think his chin is good. I don't rate it quite on the same level as the likes of Leonard, Robinson, Gavilan, Whitaker, Chavez, etc. Floyd has been hurt by guys who are not big hitters. But his recuperative powers are on point.
