I totally doubted Alvarez until tonight. He used to be such an exciting fighter. He was again tonight. :) I didn't see this coming at all.
You did tell us. I will happily eat this crow. This is probably my favorite all time outcome in MMA history. Alvarez gained my respect in the Melendez fight. They do not come any more mentally or physically tougher than Alvarez. He deserves to wear that belt. And with the UFC belt, Alvarez has to be considered the most accomplished LW in history.
It's crazy how many elite fighters are in the lightweight division. Nate Diaz #5, Anthony Pettis #7? Lightweight has to be the most stacked / unpredictable weight class.
I posted this on Mania earlier today.... And that's exactly what he did. He pressed the pace. He went for a takedown. He threw uppercuts. He beat RDA and beat him convincingly. Credit to RDA for not going down, but it was getting close to a Mercer\Morrison ending. TFK
I was disappointed in the Alvarez / Melendez and Alvarez / Pettis fights. I wanted the other guy to win and the decisions could have gone either way. Tonight there was no doubt who won.
RDA is a fucking beast too. He's been walking through all the top guys like they're nothing. I thought this would be another easy night for him.
The Jouban fight was awesome. I hadn't heard of Muhammad, but he has the heart of a warrior. I thought they were going to stop it in the first round. Muhammad came back to dominate the 3rd. Jouban showed a lot of heart in surviving at the end.
Jouban and Muhammed were given the Fight of the Night bonus. Just looked it up. Alvarez was given the bonus for performance of the night along with Pedro Munhuz. Munhoz was the guy who got the crazy first round guillotine sub in the prelims.
