Both bangers, both chinny. Knockout virtually guaranteed. Hearns was taller, with faster hands and far superior boxing skills. On paper he should win. But wait! Things are never that simple. Intangibles favour Benn. Benn didn't lose to Americans in his prime. He inexplicably beat Barkley and McClellan although he'd lose to Watson and Eubank. Benn gets bounced up and down off the canvas but guts it out and responds to take Tommy OUT in 4 rounds.
Hearns is too good, and too rangy and fast. I know Hearns lost to Barkley, but still, I can't see him not busting Benn up.
Benn has a one in a million wild bomb chance ... Other than that, he gets brutally KOd with his face-first defense
When the Benn-McLellan fight was signed I told anyone who would listen: McLellan KO 1 To the informed hardcore fan this was the only possible outcome...or maybe, just maybe...Benn would survive and make it to the 2nd round. Look what happened. Also who would have predicted that Benn would take out Barkley in 1 round? Hearns didn't manage that and it took Toney 9 rounds. Benn was a madman...and a madman is difficult to predict and to beat. Yes, on paper Hearns should win...but the intangibles man...the intangibles.....
Seriously disgraceful homer ref ... Literally pushing McClellan away so he couldn't finish that Slick Rick/Eddy Grant motherfucker off
Benn got knocked out of the ring, got back in the ring, and beat the fuck out of that cunt fair and square.
McClellan was prevented from going for the knockout by obscene homer officiating ... He was literally pushed back multiple times as he went for the kill... He would've sent Benn down to electric avenue with an honest ref
As long as we're all in agreement that the count was administered correctly (20 seconds to get back to your feet inside the ring when you are knocked outside the ropes, as opposed to the standard 10).
Yeah that part I don't have a problem with... It's the "aye, mate... That's me boyfriend!... Leave 'im alone!" stuff from the ref that bothers me
Exactly, people keep banging on about a long count, it's utter bollocks - Benn got back in the ring on time. The ref was fucking awful, but Benn would have won anyway, ultimately he just beat the fuck out of that piece of shit. A bit like Floyd vs Hatton, the ref was terrible, and helped Floyd as much as possible, while ignoring the blatant forearm to the throat and elbows etc, but ultimately Floyd won because he's better.
I hate when people say, yeah the ref was bad but he would've won anyway. As fans, are we really in a position to to say that? Can we measure in our minds the partial effect of a shitty ref, back it out, and be able to say with any confidence the adjusted outcome? I think not. Refs are dirty because as refs they indeed have the power to alter outcomes.
