Who comes to mind as fighters who everyone seems high on but who hasn't really faced anyone of note or proven they can withstand adversity? Linares Dawson Haye
Dawson has been hurt a few times and always come right back. Haye faced adversity when he beat Mormeck. Linares is for real.
Jeez, I had forgotten that Linares existed, I had to boxrec him to find out what he'd been up to, talk about a career going down the plughole..managerial issues? what's up?
I think Dawson and Haye proved their worth as elite fighters in their respective division so that leaves Linares as a question mark. It's a shame that we don't see him progressing and taking bigger challenges, he's a fighter I was really high on.
Dawson will have proven his worth if he beats Johnson in the rematch. I'm pretty surprised he signed for it and even vacated a belt to do it.
Obviously I'm referring to Haye as a heavyweight in which case it IS undeniably a good example. And as far as Dawson, he's yet to look anything close to the dominant fighter we thought he was following the Adamek fight. He nearly lost to Johnson and he fought like shit against Tarver if you ask me. It's impressive that he beat Adamek as dominantly as he did but if he doesn't have an impressive outing soon he could end up as a one-hit wonder as far as I'm concerned. For example, if he lost his next fight, regardless of the opponent, would you still show the promise in him that you seem to have? Has he done enough to the point where a single loss would put his status as a "Tiger" very much in jeopardy? You look in MM and there's barely a single contemporary fighter people would pick to beat him. I think that makes him a POTENTIAL paper tiger. Where are your examples Steve Dave? Got any? Or would you rather diminish the discussion by picking mine apart? I opened the thread with a question of who comes to mind. I listed three that come to mine. Fine. You don't think two of them are good examples. Well, can you improve on them then? And add to the discussion? Probably not, but you get my point.
Agreed. His mediocre performances against an unmotivated Tarver and his poor performance against Johnson nearly erase from my memory the virtuoso performance he put up against Adamek, which I think, by the way, was pretty much a case of Adamek sucking when it comes to fighting south-paws.
Hey salaco, me too actually, I COMPLETELY forgot about him. He was being hyped up as a player not too long ago, and now we haven't heard anything about him for months, or a year. Does anyone know what's going on with him?
Dawson doesn't belong in the thread. That's just stupid based on your own criteria. I think Valero might be the #1 choice right now. I think he is legit, like a lot of people, but he hasn't fought anyone too great, nor has he faced any adversity to speak of.
True, I also think Valero is for real but he could very well be a paper tiger based on his competition.
First name that came to me. He has a few decent names on his resume but nothing really to brag about.
I think that's debatable. He may not bethe best example (Valero's a good one although Mosquera was a serious opponent who knocked him down and and forced Valero to fight moving backwards). I guess Dawson came to mind because following the Adamek fight I thought he was brilliant, but since then he seems very vulnerable and hasn't separated himself very much.
Linares - what is that guy up to - he look awesome and then nothing. Dawson - I agree. Haye - only at HW. Berto, that guy aint shite and he hasnt faced anyone decent
That's a Bit HARSH... Colazzo's @ Least DECENT...Urango's Pretty DECENT as Well, Though Undersized @ Welter... But Overall, agREED that Berto is a "Paper Tiger"...This Guy is Gonna Get KO'ed BADLY Very Sooooon... REED:mj:
Kinda, I have a tendency to go over the top on guys I dislike. Every time Berto is on TV over here they go on about him likes he's the next big thing. Personally I don't see it. Urango is pretty decent but also very beatable. It will all end in tears when Berto really steps up.
