Watched for the first time the original 1996 Showtime movie that spawned the hit ABC Sitcom series and found it to be quite entertaining. Unlike the tv series which basically was shot indoors in a studio set of either an apartment or a HS hallway, this movie could have easily pass as a big screen movie and had a lot of outdoors scenes. Another difference was Salem, the cat. In the series they used a lameass silly phony puppet while the movie used an actual cat whose mouth was animated when he talked and that spfx still remains effective...unlike the puppet that was never convincing. The actresses that played Sabrina's aunts were different from the ones in the tv series. The plot is about Sabrina discovering she is a witch and trying to learn her powers and spells to many funny and embarrassing situations. Another plus is that we get to see Melissa Joan Hart in three different bikinis, tight sport shorts and mini-skirts to delight us with her sexy legs and booty (before I get attacked let me remind you she was age 20 when she was cast as Sabrina). A 19 year old Ryan Reynolds is the jock who is the object of Sabrina's crush. He has like a fifth billing here as he was mostly unknown. Compared with the abomination remake Netflix gave us, you know the non-fun, Satanic propaganda, PC LGBTQ diverse agenda driven thank goodness cancelled series, the original remains a watchable fun film and an innocent piece of nostalgia for those who were kids in the 90's. 7/10
