Whatever man... you don't have to play the banjo ... but people that know bluegrass will know Clawhammer, Scruggs style, Keith style etc because they are hugely impactful on what the tune will sound like and they'll know Muleskinner because they'll know Grisman, Keith, White, Rowan and Greene since all of them are legends

Solos and trade offs between soloists are a fundamental part of Bluegrass since the very beginnings with Bill Monroe ... dismissing it as self indulgent is really lazy, IMO
