Good movie. I enjoyed watching Vern Schillinger (pronounced -ur) become a music teacher.

Much better than the Best Picture winner Birdman.

    Excellent film.

J.K. Simmons is superb in this.

    It was an excellent movie.

I did keep thinking "Schillinger becomes a music teacher" as I watched JK Simmons in Oz for all those years, but his performance was indeed top-notch.

Not the type of movie that I generally am into, but it didn't take long for me to watch it and get immersed in the movie.

Jazz fascinates me, particularly jazz drumming. The timing, fills and tempos.

I generally hate Jazz but I loved this movie. Schillinger was awesome. Can't under-rate the performance by Miles Teller either. Impressive that it was a movie about a music school teacher and student, but it was tense in a "Aliens" or "Black Hawk Down" PTSD type of way.

You could probably also draw comparisons to "Black Swan" or "The Wrestler" in the way it presented the single-mindedness of the protagonist (Teller's character), and a somewhat ambiguous ending.

    8.5/10

Why did you think the ending was ambiguous? It was Charlie Parker all over again. Watch the bar scene.
The ending was that Charlie Parker seen brought out by Schillinger and produced one of the best solos the world has ever seen.

I don't think I saw it as quite the Rocky scene that you did. I think there's the chance this kid might just kill himself in the near future.

Remember the big deal they made over Charlie Parker, remember that Charlie Parker was dead by the age of 34. The music teacher was just looking for his own form of a legacy, no matter the cost to the person/musician he was imprinting it upon.

But even if he does kill himself in the near future, how does that take away from the Rocky Moment? Hendrix is dead, Legend. Parker is Dead, Legend. I could go on. It doesnt matter what happens after the credits. What matters is that one second. That one solo that will be remembered forever and it was Schillinger that brought it out of him.

I'm not so sure it was that cut and dry. There's a million different ways it could have gone. This wasn't at Altamont or Woodstock. This was some local indoor jazz fest. It's not clear whether he would have become a YouTube sensation let alone a legend. We don't even know how the audience reacted or if it was all just in his head. On top of that, most people watching the movie are not exactly Jazz drum experts, I know I'm not. That could have been little more then a bunch of white noise for all I knew.

I know I'm probably reaching on all this stuff, but that's why I called it ambiguous. We don't know what happened later even though we wanted to see how it really went down and the fallout from the performance. That's not to say that's not how the movie should have ended. I think it was better being left up in the air.

Even with the Rocky movies, you could argue it should have ended with the first one, and that every one after that was a cop-out cash grab no matter how entertaining they might have been. After all, Rocky was supposed to be Chuck Wepner, not Rocky Marciano or Joe Louis.

You dont have to be a jazz expert to know that drum solo was fucking insane and that man became an instant legend.

Wrong, Schillinger actually says before they take the stage that there are a lot of top musicians and critics in the audience and that a great performance can get your foot in the door in some top music spots and that a bad performance can kill you because "one thing about these guys, they never forget."

2+ years later and I still think I'm right ya' cunts.

He's a fucking Jazz drummer in the 21st Century. Name one legendary jazz drummer of the last 20 years. Questlove doesn't count either, ya' cunts.

Nobody cares about Jazz. That's part of the point of the movie. He and Shillinger are both chasing personal obsessions, and he might be the best that ever lived, but nobody will ever know except hardcore fans and other musicians...........and he's fine with that. Him and Shillinger both, just want to be recognized by their peers, and perhaps be remembered as "the best" at what they do, even if it's just within a small circle of people.

He'll be a sought after studio musician and bandmate, but he's not going to be on the cover of fucking "Rolling Stone" or "People" magazine. He'll be splitting gig money with 4-8 other bandmates, because nobody pays to see a single guy come out on stage and do jazz drum solos, no matter how awesome they might be.

Miles Teller didn't save jazz, Ryan Gosling didn't save jazz and Damien Chazelle didn't save jazz. They might have preserved it, but they didn't save it.

He had some great lines. That whole movie could have been a metaphor for the first half of "Full Metal Jacket".

To be quite honest, he was A LOT more ruthless and sociopathic than the Sergeant in Full Metal Jacket.

The sergeant was a dick, but he was more of a hard ass than a psycho. But hey, it's the army... he SHOULD be a hard ass.... he's preparing them for fucking war, not a concert! Most people could endure the sergeant... but Gomer Pyle was probably a headcase to begin, and was simply pushed over the edge.

The character of Terrence Fletcher in Whiplash was a sociopath.
