Boxing legend Wilfred Benitez was honored with a statue at the Sport Museum in Guaynabo,Puerto Rico. Benitez came to the ceremony accomanied by his sister Ivonne. At first Benitz was not able to recognize that the statue of the boxer in front of him was him. Later he did and was very pleased. It was a semi-sweet sight since at times Benitez looked confused and unaware of what was going on around him. Benitez, who on September 12 will be 54 years old suffers from a brain condition product of the punishment received while he was an active boxer.
One of the greatest Latin fighters ever. Would have handled Floyd Mayweather Jr. like a sparring partner.
Sparring partner?? Nah...Benitez will beat him though....Mayweather has NEVER fought anyone near Benitez skill level.
Overall, yes at 147? Schooling Palomino is more impressive to me than anything Floyd has accomplished at the weight Thats worth about 7 Victor Ortizes, Ricky Hattons and Juan Manuel Marquezes
Come on guys, give Benitez some credit. He still holds the record of the youngest guy ever to win a world title at age 17 against a solid veteran champ like Antonio Cervantes Kid Pambele at a time when Pambele was considered THE champ of the division. He became the first hispanic boxer to win 3 titles in three divisions and first boxer in 43 years since Henry Armstrong to capture a third world title. He was the fifth boxer to accomplish that (now with so many world titles available any decent boxer can get multiple titles without ever facing a real champion). Benitez fought the best at their prime (Leonard, Duran, Hearns). Yes he is a mess now, but in his prime he was a marvel to watch.
Not at 147. Absolutely no evidence of this. In fact, his near loss to odh means you have to give benitez the benefit of the doubt here.
