Basically the International Sports Oscar. He´s nominated in the category "World athlete of the year" together with Rafael Nadal Kobe Bryant Andres Iniesta Lionel Messi Sebastian Vettel My guess is Nadal will win, but it´s still pretty cool to see a fighter recognized together with athletes from far more popular and visible sports like tennis, basketball, football and formula one. The awards exist since 1999. Last two years Usain Bolt won, before him Roger Federer four times, Woods and Schumacher twice, and Armstrong once. Pacquiao is the first boxer ever to be nominated in the biggest category. Vitali Klitschko is the only fighter to ever win in 2008 in the category "Comeback of the Year". Somebody tell Floyd. :crafty::crafty:
Pacquiao isn't even the boxer of the year. But I'm with you, it's cool to see a boxer getting recognized.
Bout time boxing got some love off these International sorts.....boxing is the original sport, about time we got some attention. :shadow::shadow:
Somebody tell these guys that beating Joshua Clottey and washed up plasterless Margarito isn't impressive.
I sincerely believe a lot of it has to do with $$$......the more people follow a sport and spend $$$ on merchandise and product....the more likely it is to assume significance at these awards. People getting acclaim for running after small green balls with carbon fibre fly-swats. Its not on.
I've lived my life never hearing of the Laureus award and if they want to nominate a juicer that's their problem.
