Holy fuck. What a pathetic cunt Berto is. I originally stuck up for Berto and said he was getting too much shit and he's a decent fighter, and as much of a Khan hater as I am, I think I prefer Khan to Berto. He has more balls. Berto is the most pathetically overprotected fighter in boxing. It's not his team either. If he REALLY wanted legit fights, he'd get them. He didn't seem too keen on facing Pacquiao either. As much of a headcase as Ortiz is, I hope he knocks the fuck out of Berto.
Are they really at the cash out stage? I guess you're right. Realistically, Ortiz has no future at the top of any division. Still, I figure he'd rather face the big names at 140.
of course NOT.....and if they were why vs. Berto? Does he really bring in more money than a fight vs. Khan? or the winner of Bradley vs. Alexander?
It IS his team, Haymon specifically. Last year couldn't have went worse for him. Arreola's still trying to reinvent the wheel but for all intent and purposes is done as a HVY player. Williams went very backwards in 2010. Floyd might be heading for jail. Taylor bowed out of the S6, and probably boxing altogether. Believe me, I'm not a fan of this fight, either. But at the same time - HBO is actually the one pushing for it. They rejected Bailey and Cintron as opponents (not sure why, I'd take both over a 147 lb. Ortiz). As for the Pac stuff... the idiots at The Ring say the same thing. But Berto/DiBella actually submitted a very reasonable purse request for the fight when Arum was pretending that anyone other than Shane was even in the running. Arum himself even admitted that Berto's request was fair. Doesn't sound like the actions of a guy who didn't want to fight Pacquiao. Honestly, outside of Floyd, who in their right mind would NOT want to fight Pacquiao right now?
I think the Peterson fight revealed a little too much for them. Not to mention he's stuck - struggling to make 140, but will probably never grow into a true welter. Clearly no longer has the heart to survive a firefight or any meaningful power (and Lampley's insistence that "Ortiz has a chin" throughout the fight w/ modest hitting Peterson had to be the worst observation in recent broadcasting history). All that considered, Berto is absolutely his best shot at a payday, title and redemption if he's to move up.
It looks like we will have to wait until November/December again for any serious fights this year. Aside from Bradley-Alexander can't think of too much to get excited for in 2011 so far.
I guess they figure with Berto's chin vunerabilities that Ortiz has a decent shot. I dont care really. Either Ortiz will catch and KO Berto, or Berto hammers and KO's Ortiz. Either result I'll find some joy in.
blame the haymon boxing organization, not berto. honestly ortiz is a better foe than bailey at this point, and cintron does not belong on premium television.
Even though Shitron is a puss, he is a bigger threat to Berto than Ortiz is. BUT... after the Williams fight I agree with you. He doesnt really deserve to be on any network. Agreed about Bailey. Randall is shot to shit, and lets be honest.... has never won a quality fight in his career.
Have you ever seen them Hauser articles on HBO, where every promoter blames HBO for boxings decline in popularity, even though it's the promoters that are making these fights then doing nothing at all to promote them.
Well I see why HBO rejected Bailey and really it's no surprise to me at all that Berto tried to go there, but supposedly the reason HBO rejected Cintron is because once Paul Williams wakes up they want to have him rematch Cintron. Don't forget Cotto vs Mayorga and Mosley vs Pacquiao. The best matchup so far is Bradley vs Alexander and that's sure to be a snooze-fest just because you expect it to be good and we've waited for it for so long.
Lampley is the broadcast equivalent of referee Steve Smoger. He tries to keep fighters in the fight, more particularly, he keeps trying to convince you, the viewer, that both fighters are still in it. He sometimes just invents shit to keep the audience going, he's like a car salesman..."wow, look at that deep lacquer, look at that chrome, how about that power steering, George, what about those options, Lennox" Ortiz never had it as a fighter and it seems he is unlikely to advance any further- I wonder how much more money there is in it for him vs Berto than vs Khan. Ironically, Khan may view him as too much of a risk, especially so "soon" after the Maidana "epic"...so......who knows. Maybe Ortiz just wants $1m in his hand so he can retire.
I didn't like the Peterson performance, but I haven't written off Ortiz. I think the guy is talented, has potential to improve, and could be a champion at 140. It remains to be seen if he can carry 147, but I don't like his first fight against a legit welter to be against Berto. I guess I'm the only one who will admit it and maybe the only one who still believes it, but I thought Freddy Hernandez was a solid opponent and a very good win for Berto. As far as what I would like Berto to do now...the junior welterweight thing is tired...so look to the welters... I think the fight I like the most is Berto vs Kell Brook. I think that fight might get some Brits to cross the pond (it would be even better in England, but that's not happening with HBO). It sets up Brook to gain a belt against a credible champ and would make him a viable opponent for pacq or floyd. It would be a nice payday for Berto and would give him a legit win unless he blew out Brook. Otherwise, I'd have Berto go title hunting...Jan Zaveck (IBF) and Senchenko (WBA). The other fight that I wouldn't want to see as much as those three, but might make the most sense for HBO is Saul Alvarez.
