Unbeaten junior welterweight Joan Guzman is facing a likely fine and/or suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commission after testing positive for the banned diuretic Furosemide following his December bout against Jason Davis.

Guzman has previously won world title fights at 122 lbs and 130 lbs, but his recent battles with the scale have repeatedly damaged his career. In September 2008, Guzman’s world title challenge against unified lightweight champion Nate Campbell was cancelled after Guzman came in 3.5 lbs heavy. In March 2010, Guzman was an astonishing 9 lbs heavy for another lightweight title fight against Ali Funeka. Then after moving to jr welterweight in December 2010, Guzman still came in 4.5 lbs heavy for the above bout against Davis.

HBO executive Ross Greenburg immediately promised Joan Guzman another opportunity. Bob Arum commented on a possible catchweight bout with Manny Pacquiao for the WBC diamond middleweight championship at 158 1/2 pounds, but demanded Guzman would have to accept Olympic style testing and a one million dollar penalty for every pound over the limit.

Joan Guzman the dominican? That cocksucker got two gift victories vs. Funeka after coming in over the limit...and he is still at it! :Chainsaw:

And ARUM is a REAL SCUMBAG....Guzman vs. Pacquiao for the DIAMOND(?) Middleweight championship.?? AT 158 1/2 pounds? Olympic testing?

I wish it wasn't a joke. I'd love to see that overrated bellend get plastered by Pacquiao.

Interestingly enough, Pacquiao/Guzman @122 was in fact a coveted match-up, one that to this day, knowing what we know about both fighters, would still have been a compelling match-up.

A diuretic will not give you any advantage, period. It only helps to cut weight quickly and dehydrates you.

    ... which is an advantage

Guzman will probably get the strict punishment of 10 000 fine and two-month ban

Being dehydrated a day or two before fight night is not an advantage ugo. Of course he could come in 2 weight classes heavier on fight night, but it doesn't improves his performance.

I dont like Guzman but I don't like the use of the word "doping" either...its not like he was on the gear that makes you go fast, or throw lots of punches, or make it hard to hurt, or give you mad recovery times.

He took some shit to help his fat ass make weight.

    He's not a Pedder.

How often do we have to go through this. Diuretics are also used to mask PEDs. Do you honestly think they put this stuff on doping lists, because they have nothing better to do?

I don't get how any of you guys can't see this as an unfair advantage. Making weight is one of the most critical things in training/boxing. And you don't have to go through a long weakening process instead you just pop some pills lose water quickly can rehydrate quickly.

That makes you feel so much better and gives you such a huge advantage compared to doing it naturally.

Negelecting that is equally stupid as saying doing steroids doesn't help your boxing skills... :notallthere:

That's exactly what it was... Not going through a natural starving process helps you go faster, throw more punches, make it harder to hurt you etc... it ENHANCES your PERFORMANCE and it's a drug

It improves your overall condition and therefore all physical abilities that you have. Funny how short-sighted some of you are about this. Gotta see the big picture here.

If he dehydrated himself to make the weight, then he doesn't perform for as well for as long in the ring, and it shows in due course.

There are extremes, a la Gatti vs Gamache, but that had aggravating circumstances, such as Arturo not making the weight in the first place at all.

What Guzman did was no worse than Floyd buying his way out of not making the weight vs Marquez, in effect buying himself a further size advantage which he then used to maximum effect. The financial cost of the size advantage was dwarfed by his purse.

In fact what Floyd did was worse. What Guzman did was going to wear off after 2, 3 rounds. Floyd stayed pumped all night.

All I'm saying is it easier that way then losing the weight naturally - For a PEDquiao guy like you to play it down, that's either completely hipocrite or you just have no clue about the effects here.

The Mayweather thing is just as bad effect-wise maybe but unfortunately legal.

Pacquiao is an all-timer. Guzman is a underachiever.
