Named WBC "Emeritus Champion"
Official WBC Statement: The WBC is proud to announce the appointment of Sergio Martinez as Emeritus Champion. Sergio Martinez is a two-time world champion, as he conquered the WBC super welterweight championship and then defeated great champion Kelly Pavlik to conquer the WBC middleweight championship. He then defeated Paul Williams with a dramatic “Knockout of the Year.” Sergio Martinez is a true example for the youth outside the ring and is constantly active in the WBC Cares Program, visiting children’s hospitals, underprivileged children’s housing, and has a formal company in support of abused women making him a true influence all around the world. With Sergio Martinez’ designation as Emeritus Champion and Ambassador of Good Will and Peace, WBC interim champion Sebastian Zbik of Germany becomes the WBC world middleweight champion and must face the mandatory contender Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Who gives a fuck? People really need to stop following these belts.

It sucks, but Martinez and DiBella knew it was coming.

They were actually willing to make the mandatory defense, but HBO rejected Zbik (and several others) as an opponent. They were affixed on Dzinziruk for the March 12 date, and DiBella already pledged his loyalty to keeping Sergio on HBO for at least this one fight.

Just wanted to clarify, in case people were simply going by the abridged version offered by those in the media who can't go an hour w/o talking shit about the sanctioning bodies.

honstly, does anyone still give two shits about boxing at all.

Even from 3 years ago, its really gone downhill, nobody knows or cares at all.

Yeah, I got it from Dan Rafael's twitter:TLC:

It's gone well past the point where media should be talking shit about them. They should be ignored outright.

The belts have outdone themselves in the last few years with emeritus this, gold/silver that. There's no more credibility.

I agree. I don't even mention them, unless it's something specific - like ordering a purse bid, or even directly quoting someone from the sanctioning body.

I just don't get what guys like Rafael get out of wasting so much time and so many keystrokes criticizing their every move. Even worse, that people shit on the sanctioning bodies (justifiably so), laugh at all of the various belts (again, justifiably so) but then in the same breath refer to someone like Guillermo Rigondeaux as an interim WORLD champion. Makes no sense at all. None.

The WBC is good for boxing.

It's frustrating. It would probably take a few famous fighters that care more about the sport than they do money to make a good run at banishing these belts. That's a lot, probably too much, to ask of any fighter, however.

Dan Rafael = a pox on #intelligence.

Problem is even if they did, the younger up and comers still would value the "championship" belts regardless.

Not if the most famous fighters in boxing dismissed them. At least I don't think so. We'll probably never find out.

I've had a recurring dream over the years. I play by the rules, and win all the belts at heavyweight. After I win the last one, and I'm the "undisputed" heavyweight champion, during my interview with Larry Merchant, I throw all of my belts into a garbage can, instantly destroying their credibility. Other fighters follow suit and boxing goes on to become the most popular sport in the world and I'm the man. :bears:

I don't think it would make a very impact. If it did it would only be in the short term. The problem is it's not just the fighters. Promoters love to sell a "championship" fight even it's for the WABBC interim light super middleweight world championship of eastern Ohio.

It's true. Still, I'd like to see it happen. MAB was talking about it years ago when he was featherweight champion, but he didn't stick with it.

Do you go on to fight Michael Dokes and Jesse Ferguson?

No, but he did fight Tapia after the brutal Medina performance and then Kevin Kelley of all fighters...hardly praiseworthy.

No, I take on all comers. It's not throwing them out in a ducking, don't want to fight my mandatory way. :nono:

You are in an extreme minority. Laypeople dont even know who sergio martinez is. Laypeople might've heard of the klitschko's but couldn't possibly name another HW contender. To them if they know about anything, its the great Shane Mosley vs. pacquiao matchup, which should be a close fight (jacking off smilie)

Its incredible how bad its become in just a few years. And it'll never get better. In 20 years, nobody will know or care about any boxing.

True. I just threw MAB out there because he was the only clear champion of a division that I can remember suggesting such a thing off the top of my head.

No one has known anything about boxing since I started watching. I'm used to it. I'll probably keep going until it doesn't exist anymore... and I don't see that happening anytime soon.

You should give those belts to me steve_dave. I could sell them on Ebay for you.

I might make a run at the heavyweight title starting today so I can live my dream. :bears:

I would give you my belts, Noble.
