Gomez and Vitali were former sparring partners- its hard to say who that benefitted most. Suffice it to say Boxing Monthly ran a special on it claiming that the nature of the fight meant that David Haye, the GBH, just HAD to "break the Klitschko stranglehold". They held out hope that golden smiles would be wiped from faces, but Haye turned faggot and moved to Malmo.

Just to conclude- the best win need not be a win over the best fighter.

James Douglas described his fight with Tony LaRosa as being harder than the one with Tyson.

    Just some perspective.

    So Sanders it is?

Obviously not the Sanders that was 10-pounds lighter a year earlier vs. Wlad, but as Irish pointed out (albeit with some major exaggeration), it was a pretty big fight at the time, and Sanders was coming off a good win.

Irish, I know you like to bring up common opponents when it suits you. So what are your thoughts on Nate Tubbs, then?

I dont like to bring up common opponents. Unfortunately I am forced to because this forum is populated by Cardigan wearing Canadian Libbers who would not look out of place in a Jewison movie.

You forgot Lou Saverese and Tommy Morrison who did such stellar jobs with the same Foreman who splattered Moorer. Period. And Axel Schulz did a better job. How come Moorer could beat Schulz but couldn't beat Foreman.

I don't think of Nate Tubbs. Now I understand you pine for him. So why don't you tell us all about him, you can quote your Nate Tubbs Annual if you want.

Dass they one!! Dass they one!!!

So what are you saying? We should dig Nate Tubbs up from retirement {if his ass is still alive} get him down to his fighting weight, get him to come into the ring with a song like....."All Klitschkos Look Alike To Me" and see if he can turn the trick.

I'd appreciate it if you could swing it for me- when Vitali is through with him all he has to do is run his shaft up Beyonce and well have us a right regular legend on our hands.

Do it Steve. Do it for the division. Do it for bahxin, baby. :cheer:

I'm just pointing out that bringing up common opponents is a pretty stupid thing to do.

You are one paranoid supremacist, Irish.

Common opponents are common opponents- bringing them up is neither smart nor stupid, but an inevitable consequence of the linear nature of the sport.

If you cannot get into an argument without your own points being taken off you and wrapped around your skull then don't get into the argument in the first place.

    "Spew"- thats charming.

Bottom line is that every second Mike Moorer spends peeling himself off the mat versus Foreman is a second I spend laughing at your Vitali-oriented cynicism.

Vitali is a very good fighter who I think could have hung in any era. It's a shame he was born in the year he was but what can you do?

Not a whole load. You just accept that the man, on spec alone, would have constituted a legitimate opponent for some of these ATG's and that his performances have been sufficiently adept and adroit to back that line of thinking up.

It does not augur well for those claiming to be objective fight-fans that they should put so much stock and faith in the fragmented, Formanized era of the 1990's whilst simultaneously casting aspersions on a guy like Vitali.

One must not dwell on inferiority- it is both rude and a waste of time, on both counts.

    Good points.

So I take it you agree that you can see a fighter is a very good, despite the perceived level of the opposition?

Thats a key word. Its ironic. The opposition is perceived as poor as they cannot get rid of a guy who is perceived as poor. So the lie repeats itself thanks to the original mistake. In effect, other fighters have their reputations besmirched because the champion they have failed to unseat is disliked. Yet, we are told, this is good journalism. Its like the 14/1 outsider winning a race and the favourite, who was a very good horse, being dismissed as fit only for the knackers yard. Its a bunkum. A false-science.

The corollary, as pointed out, is true. Backus had a stoppage win over a prime Jose Napoles. Club-Foot, Cut-Prone Antuofermo has a draw with Hagler. Mickey Walker has a win over Tiger Flowers- he only has it cos his management struck a 10 round limit for the fight. Nate Tubbs stopped Sanders. Do we now elevate Backus, Antuofermo, Tubbs etc to the same status as the men they beat? No.

Ditto we do not relegate Vitali to some lower tier simply because it has been decided that the division is not as strong as those Halcyon days of 1995, when old fat men were not contenders, but Champions proper.

And who is doing this deciding? Max Kellerman? Wally Matthews? Jack Newfield? Please.

6'8". 250lbs. Has an array of weird punches, loves to counterpunch, has a great chin, never been down, can jab, crack, go to the body- I say he is one dangerous dude, no matter what the era.

And what a bunch of haters hanging around down at the Schul have to say after that is irrelevant.

Thats okay. Vitali is in the business of rendering people less-erect than when they started.

Really? Who did Briggs KO at 44 years of age to win the Undisputed Heavyweight Title? How many cracks at the heavyweight title has Briggs had since his comeback off a 10 year lay-off which he preceded with a loss to a Jimmy Young-esque fighter? You're about as smart as you sound Mitchell. Not very.

Was it splintered when Holy fought Foreman? Foreman was widely regarded as the man when he fought and beat former 175lb Champion, Michael Moorer. Lets not act as if Foreman picked up an obscure title in a fight that would never have happened if Bowe hadn't flung away the WBC out of fear of Lewis. Hell of an era that must have been.
