Pong Wonjongkam beat Naito in their first meeting via one round KO but I believe it was in the 2nd or 3rd minute, and Naito went on to beat him by decision in one of their later rematches (there were a few)

Amir took a dive in the first fight. Into the crowd.

No, actually it was like 30 seconds or so. I know it was the fastest KO in flyweight title fight history. Was definitely under a minute.

I forget if they fought four or five times - I think it's four, in which case Naito won the third (and the flyweight title along with it) and they drew in the 4th fight.

Considered yourself duly chastised, Salaco. In fact dont post here again until you have first purged yourself of your pugilistic contempt.:shadow:

Jake: Did Flynn beat Dempsey or was it a dive? That is one of the closest answers to the question posed....but it counts for squat if Dempsey really dived. 1st round seems a bad round to take a dive in.

ha, please. no chastising whatsoever. was a terrific example by salaco.

On Dempsey-Flynn - I'm no historian. But I don't suspect there was a dive (although who knows back then). In fact, Dempsey changed the way he fought after that fight. Flynn scored so many knockdown by standing over him and continuing to knock him down every time he attempted to get back up. Dempsey employed the same tactic soon thereafter.

Cheers Jake, in that case it meets the criteria. You have to hand it to Naito, lost twice, once by KO and he keeps plugging away without being diminished himself until he catches a less prepared or just lesser Pong.

yup, that is amazing. I remember wrongly taking Pong to task for entertaining a third fight with Naito - I forget what other fight was on the table at the time, but remember being upset that it wasn't being pursued.

I'm pretty sure it was Tam Tam who rightfully put me in my place and reminded me that Naito had beaten everyone else and was still a legit flyweight contender.

    A couple of years later...

does anyone know off-hand how early Vazquez knocked out Larios? I know it was 1st round, but I think it was more towards the two-minute side. If earlier, then it would apply as well, as Larios won the rematch (12th round KO in an absolute war that had the misfortune of airing on the same weekend as Ward-Gatti I).

I figured it to be a lock around 2 weeks ago. McCloskey may have been asking for more money who knows.

I don't have a problem with Khan taking a soft touch after Maidana.

I think he'd destroy Prescott in a rematch, but I'd like to see it anyway. IMO when another guy KOs you, no matter how far you go after that, you'll always have something to prove against him.

Fightnews is reporting that the McCloskey fight is off. Maybe we'll get to see a Prescott rematch, after all?

I can't find any news on who Khan will face next. I'd like to see a Prescott re-match, but wouldn't be surprised if this did not happen

I thought about this one as well, but watched the first fight and it was over a minute

good spots all round. got to say, looking at the vasquez-larios fight, it was basically a firefight where both guys landed bombs. even with naito-wonjongkam I, only 37 seconds, both guys were throwing. but against khan, prescott threw 12 total punches in the fight, and only six of them even landed. khan maybe landed one or two jabs. the second punch prescott landed turned khan into :hammert: .

i'm guessing nobody within memory in boxing history has avenged a man-versus-tofu beatdown like that.

Khan will be smarter in a re-match vs Prescott.

Again, lose lose fight for Khan to face Prescott.

Prescott hasn't done a damn thing since then and if lightning were to strike twice, then who would take Khan seriously anymore?

Agreed. All risk and no reward, besides personal satisfaction. He has a massive fight with the Bradley-Alexander winner right round the corner, why risk everything for a bit of get back? He can deal with that later.

I do agree with Irish as well that Prescott is a different type of puncher to Maidana. Maidana is clearly a much better fighter but Prescott will always pose problems for Khan with his height and range, although I'd pick Khan to win the rematch. A small guy like Mitchell can duck under the wild swings and befuddle Prescott with basic movement, but Khans height means he's always going to be within range for something dangerous.
