Better Left Hook?

  1. Trinidad

    57.7%
  2. Leonard

    42.3%
  1. According to a certain ghetto fabulous poster here, Leonard's left hook at 147lbs was more powerful than Oscar De La Hoya's.

So what about vs Trinidad's? What's the consensus?

  2. Someone please add a poll. I forgot to...

    thanks.

Tito's was more powerful. Who's was 'better' is probably a more nuanced debate though.

  4. Tito's was better as well, IMO. It was very accurate and rather unpredictable. Therefore the only deciding factor would be power, and Tito's was more powerful.

Tito telegraphed his somewhat. He had stiff legs and tended to really transfer his weight onto his lead leg to throw it. Against top drawer counter punchers who could read his feet on at that level it'd have always have reduced it's effectiveness.

Leonard could set his feet and pop his out much more quickly. Tito still had a fantastic hook of course, I wouldn't go as far in my criticism of him to deny that....

    Agreed.

Although thinking as an opponent facing both, i'd be more fearful of Tito's hook than Leonard's.

I'd be more wary of Tito's hook as a potential fight decider. But if I was a really top drawer thinking/technical fighter I'd also be much more confident of being able to neutralise Tito's.

Agreed again. It's not quite apples and oranges, but it is to a degree subjective.

I voted Leonard. Once you shutdown Tito's left hook he was very easily neutralized.

Pretty much true but that alone doesn't mean Leonard's hook was better.

Tito threw a powerful but wide hook and his wraps have to come into question.

Good points. Hopkins said he often knew when Trinidad's left hook was coming because of Tito's legs and feet.

I'm not sure if that necessarily makes Leonard's left hook better though, he was just a plain superior fighter with more tools and better skills.

I've always thought that Leonard's left hook is one of the underrated great punches. People always talk about the left hooks of Trinidad, DLH, Tua, Frazier, etc....Leonard's left hook was great too. He just didn't need to rely on it as much as a lot of other fighters.

Tito, but Leonard was a better boxer.

Trinidad's was better --- about the only thing he did better, mind.

Leonard. Tito's is just magnified as an attribute because it was pretty much all he had, whereas Leonard was one of the most offensively (and defensively) versatile fighters of all time.

As Noted by Most, Tito RELIED on his Left Hook More, Thereby Accumulating More MILEAGE w/his Hook...Tito has a Looooooooooonger Left Hook "Hit List" than Ray Leonard Does...It's like Asking "Who has the Better JAB, Roy Jones or Virgil Hill?"...Hill CLEARLY Got More Out of his Jab than Roy, yet when they Fought, Roy's Jab was MORE Effective...

    Leonard by a decent bit.

Ray Leonard actually shortened up his hook for the Duran Re.

Tito threw the same wide hook his entire career.

I wouldn't say it was all he had. It was obviously his best weapon, but Trinidad's offensive arsenal wasn't that limited. He had a heavy jab, good straight right. Not bad with the uppercuts either.

The long straight right hand turned the momentum of Vargas fight back in his favor after Vargas dropped Tito in the 4th, and dominated the 5th.

Tito's was harder, but Leonard's was quicker and more than hard enough... I'll take the guy who showed he could land that hook on ANYbody instead of the guy who couldn't do shit with it once you stuck a jab in his face

Earnie Shavers' right hand was harder than any heavyweight maybe ever, but I'd take Lennox Lewis's or Joe Louis's far more successful right hands over Shavers' despite that fact
