Hearns was twice a LHW champion and he beat two solid LHWs (Andries, Hill) to do it... I dont see this as clear cut as Jake does... we know Moorer hit hard at 175, but thats really all we know... Its not as if every single guy who punched hard automatically KOd Thomas Hearns... not saying, it couldnt happen, but I think Moorer himself would have plenty to be aware of in there too
I think Hearns troubles Moorer greatly, using his great jab and ring work to great use, but feel Moorer would have enough to gain a TKO decision.
Dog Jones asked for the who and why, so I went with the quick response in an apparent failed attempt at humor. Hearns would most certainly have his moments, I don't see his chin or stamina allowing him to last 12 in this one. And yes, I realize that Moorer's LHW resume is paper thin and there's not much to handicap. But he went on to prove that he can actually box. It's not like LHW was his last stop, otherwise I wouldn't make such a prediction.
The best person to ask is Manny Steward. Moorer and Hearns trained at Kronk together. I could have sworn I'd heard Manny talking about Moorer giving Hearns good work back then. Wasn't Toney around Kronk then as well?
not sure what to think of trainers' opinions on their fighters fighting each other. i remember freddie roach saying that tyson would KO toney had they fought back in 04 or 05. i think toney would've beaten his ass. he also said that toney was a top 5 heavy of all time.
resume shmesume.. Come on Cdogg, you know Andries was shit. You really think Dennis Andries, even with his "better resume", would have had a chance against Michael Moorer? At the time when Tyson face Berbick..Berbick had the "better resume". Some food for thought...
Toney was there very early in his career, but to my knowledge put in far more work at Galaxy Gym. I forget his trainers name (BIll Miller?), but pretty sure that he also trained former featherweight champ Tom Johnson.
you brought up resumes you are calling Andries and Hill shit and saying they never beat anyone of note while propping up a fighter who's most notable opponent at 175 is Leslie Stewart, a guy Virgill knocked out two years earlier, a guy who Donny Lalonde knocked out as well a year before Moorer... Moorer held the WBO belt when that was a totally meaningless title, the equivalent of being the IBO champion today, perhaps even LESS so... he fought a collection of nobodies at 175, absolutely no one... Hill's comp was awful, but there at least a handful of ranked contenders in there, and he actually held a real championship belt... Andries as well had a real belt, and he at least beat Jeff Harding... I'm not saying he was a great fighter, but he was clearly better than anyone Moorer actually fought by a mile... Hill was better than anyone Moorer fought by several miles... people act is if the LHW Moorer is somehow impervious to the things that compromised the HW Moorer, I don't see how that can be the consensus when the level of opposition he faced at heavyweight is a million times better... who did he fight that was going to test him for real at that weight? a lot of talented, hard hitting guys can look invincible against opposition like that and be exposed when they move up to better competition... I can't give Moorer credit as some great LHW when he never fought even a GOOD one in his life, nor can I just assume that the flaws he had at HW only existed because he was a HW... if there was evidence to support it, if he had actually beaten some good LHWs and been truly proven there, that'd be different
