Joe Calzaghe vs Thomas Hearns at 168/175

Discussion in 'Mythical Matchups' started by Destruction and Mayhem, Feb 15, 2011.

  1. Prime Calzaghe vs whatever version of Hearns at 168lbs or 175lbs that you want to conjure up.

    What transpires?

Hearns hurts Calzaghe early on, perhaps even drops him, but eventually Calzaghe runs over him. The difference in physical strength would be the deciding factor, as Calzaghe gets close and slaps the fight out of Hearns who just can't keep him off

Calzaghe would never fight any version of a serviceable Hearns in a mythical matchup. He'd take the current version of Hearns.

he would've fought the version that beat hill and would've beaten his ass.

A competitive brawl early on, but Joe takes the initiative mid rounds and stops Tommy late.

  6. This type of response is beneath you. You're a good poster.

It's a "mythical Matchup" and so just comment on the matchup itself rather than whether or not you think so and so would have fought so and so.

Of course p4p this is no contest in favor of Hearns.

But at 168 or any weight above, I think Calzaghe weathers the early storm and turns up the volume and he'd either stop Hearns late or win a UD based on his workrate.

  8. I don't agree. Calzaghe was no bum.

He wasn't but it's hard to imagine somebody beating Hearns with no punching power, especially if they are the same size.

  10. Agreed.

But Calzaghe's chin is pretty good and he has insane stamina, speed and movement. Tough fight for Hearns...even P4P.

agREED. Calzaghe would be in for a world of hurt against Hearns P4P.

Hearns by wide UD, dropping him a couple times along the way with the right.

Calslappy doesn't have the pop to bother Hearns, and he wouldn't even try to go to war with him. LOL@"outwork Hearns," have you guys ever watched a Hearns fight?!

  14. You really think Hearns would beat Calzaghe at 168/175?

    But KO? Decision? How?

I saw Calzaghe dropped hard by a right hand from the alcoholic Byron Mitchell. He doesn't get up after Tommy lands that shot.

I saw Calzaghe dropped by old ass Hopkins and Jones by right hands...neither had the bomb Hearns had.

He wasn't hurt in the Hopkins knockdown, and he put Mitchell on the deck seconds after going down himself, can't have been that bad. The Jones knockdown was a freak punch, it wasn't even a punch.

  18. Fair enough. Good points.

  19. Good counter points..

The Jones knockdown was a cuff more than anything else. The Hopkins knockdown is the most telling. Go back and watch it again...Hopkins set his ass up perfectly and Joe walked face first into that shot. Joe never saw it coming.

My thought is, against Hearns who threw much better and straighter right hands...coupled with his ability to shade the punch...Joe walks into it all night or as long as the night lasts.

Lastly, regarding Mitchell...Joe was very hurt and note the classicifaction of Mitchell as a drunk...because he was. Damn near came straight from rehab to fight Joe.

It was a good shot from Bernard but he wasn't hurt, also I think Calzaghe didn't have respect for Hopkins power and was a little reckless as he wanted to impress on his US debut. I doubt he would approach Hearns with the same abandon.

He wasn't hurt against Mitchell, I actually think he was more hurt by the Jones punch, that was a proper forearm in the mush
