There is, but a lot of that hype began among fans in Mexico and Golden Boy's trying to capitalize on it by bringing it to the States. He's getting talked about a lot because Golden Boy has been putting him in key undercard slots and now by getting him a title shot and HBO main event. I don't necessarily think all the talk translates into "buying in". Daniel Jacobs was getting a lot of talk before the Pirog loss, and yet he'd seemingly developed as many doubters as believers in his HBO/HBO PPV appearances...at least on this forum.
NO!!! Nothing special. Likeable enough fighter, decent speed, decentish power, decent skills. Pretty much an average fighter at world level.
Are you talking about Jones? I think he's better than an "average" world level fighter...good enough to win a world title. He's in the top 5 of all, so he'll show whether he can eventually.
I don't really hold it against him that he couldn't put away Soto-Karass. He's an interesting fighter...a tall welterweight that makes body punching that much of his offense. I do agree with the sentiment that there's no rush to see him back on HBO, especially if the match-up isn't better.
It's Funny that U're Actually HIGH on Jones, w/NO VISUAL Evidence, Other than the Soto-Karass Fights, yet U've ALREADY Relegated Hatley to the Trash Heap...Jones is just Another East Coast Based HYPEJOB...An OVERSIZED 1 @ That.... Hatley's YOUNGER, More Fan-Friendly AND More Naturally TALENTED...Within the Next Year or Year 1/2, U'll B APOLOGIZING to REED for the Insinuation... REED:hammert:
Jones would Obviously HAVE to B Favored RIGHT NOW, but REED Thinks Things Could Look MUCH Different by the END of 2012...Put it this Way, REED Thinks Hatley KO's Soto-Karass RIGHT NOW... Jus' Sayin'... REED:dunno:
U're ENTITLED to your Opinion, Brother X...But REED's of the Opinion that U'll B LAUGHING @ the Fallacy of this Assertion, in Due Time... We'll See... REED:kidcool:
Mitchell, there are PLENTY of average world level fighters who win world titles, I don't need to tell you that. Cintron is one example, he even defended it a couple of times. Jones is a cintron level fighter, average at world level. Not good enough to be a legit world champ, put it that way.
Just wanted to make sure we agreed he was on the average champion level, not one below it. I think I'd rate him a little above Cintron.
So is Jones fighting Kell Brook? I heard that was happening. I'm not a massive fan of Brook but I think he has enough to beat Jones from what I've seen, which isn't much admittedly.
They were supposed to fight last year, but Peltz passed on the fight in favor of what he felt would be greater exposure on the Pac-Margarito undercard. He even acknowledged that Brook would've been the bigger payday (and for a belt) but felt Jones would benefit from more exposure. Whoops! That said... I'm not yet completely sold on Brook. Jones admittedly didn't look like a world beater in his two-fight set w/ JSK, but from what I've seen of him on the prospect level (Telefutura onward) I'd favor him against Brook if they were to fight anytime in the near future. It's weird, but I kind of like the fact that Jones knows when to box and when to brawl - and that he knows he's a boxer first, and a banger when he needs to be (he certainly learned that much last November). I think his handlers got in his head too much last November, insisting that he put on a show rather than merely win the fight. He was far more disciplined on Saturday night, if not a bit too deliberate. I see him winning a belt or two in the future. Not sure he'll ever be referred to as a P4P entrant, but I've liked him for a while and wouldn't mind seeing him fight Berto or Senchenko.
Dan Rafael reporting that Peltz is saying the co-feature to a potential Donaire-Moreno bout is May could be Mike Jones again. http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=6175535
