    What are you talking about?

G-father's the one giving Alvarez-Hatton all the significance.

If fairness, Alvarez is just about the only marketable YOUNG fighter on the precipice of championship level in the sport right now. So his fate's pretty significant.

In MARCH 2011, a win over Alvarez or Hatton isn't in the same class as a win over Martinez or Dzinziruk.

That's like saying Pirog's win over Jacobs would rate higher than if he'd beaten Martinez or Dzinziruk would...and sorry, that ain't the case, either.

Only if Hatton wins. Which he shouldnt. If Matthew Hatton were to derail Alvarez, how can anyone that follows this sport say it doesnt matter?

If martinez beats Dzinziruk and Hatton beats Alverez, more people will be talking about the Hatton win.

    Clever attempt there.

    It's bullshit.

    But it's clever.

It isn't for Alvarez but the outcome might be more significant for BOXING.

actually sir i am originally from Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Now living in Yermo, California. I simply have an affinity for British domestic level warriors and the knowledgeable chaps here who think bouts involving them matter.

Um, he's ginger. I don't see him being particularly marketable or popular.

If by "BOXING" you mean Golden Boy Promotions.

The fact is, even if he loses, you haven't heard the last of him...just like you didn't when Victor Ortiz and Danny Jacobs lost.

He's popular in Mexico and among Mexican Americans.

I do expect a sizeable crowd in Anaheim for the fight.

Chavez Jr. is extremely marketable among the same or similar audience.

Hes potentially way more marketable & way better than either of them. Hes a potential star & boxing desperately needs young stars

If he can't beat Matthew Hatton, then no amount of hoping or wishing - on the part of you, his promoter or his network - is going to make him the young star you're describing.

it would help if those stars were able to fight. how long before we find out if alvarez can or not is the question.

How long before we find out if he's ever going to fight at 154?

Exactly...the significance of Alvarez losing to Hatton would be he's no longer significant.

That's the most "significant" outcome you can come up with for this fight...that the outcome is basically insignificant.

Which would be a significant blow for boxing because a potential young star wouldn't turn out to be one & boxing NEEDS young stars right now. What about this are you missing, mate? Take a breath and get it, please.

LOL, you actually sound like the segment of the audience HBO shills to.

A significant blow to boxing? LOL.

Alvarez doesn't even fight in the weight class the WBC has him ranked #1.

There's a long way to go before Alvarez proves he's close to having the potential to be a fighter with lasting potential...and until then, from what I've seen, I'll keep my expectations of him measured.

Hatton will do little showing whether he does. The only thing he can show is if he doesn't.

    Dog chases tail.

I don't really think of fights as significant when it's entirely contingent on the outcome (For some reason I thought I already said all of this, but I guess I never posted it). Martinez-Dzinziruk is a far more significant fight for obvious reasons.

Alvarez-Hatton is a very expensive ESPN2-level fight. It's significance is only in Alvarez' popularity, but not a fight that shapes the dynamic of the sport - even if Hatton were to beat him. Hatton winning would be a major upset, but my guess is that more people would talk about Alvarez losing than Hatton winning, if that makes sense.

Even if Hatton won, it would be news until... March 12, after which point the main topics will center around where Martinez belongs on P4P rankings and Cotto's future after he beats the booze and nicotine out of Mayorga.

What about in March 12 2013 when Martinez retires and we look around for significant, marketable young talents around those weights to talk about? We may be entertaining a significant problem. The long term consequences of Alvarez' next few fights; aka whether he proves himself to be an exciting world class talent, are big. The consequences of an event to me are synonymous with it's 'significance'.

Martinez is 36 years years old, remember. Of course Martinez-Dzinziruk is a far better fight, Im just suggesting that there are further criteria to a fights significance than that.

Yep, Alvarez is very much regarded as a marketable kid with a good style who will do good business and bring in revenue from the States, Mexico and fuck it, probably even Ireland. His stoppage of Baldomir, his relative good looks and his lineage are all helping to propel him along nicely.

Hatton looks like he could feature in a few advertisements warning about the dangers of Leukaemia, but thats about it. I don't think anyone outside of his mom is really rooting for him. Fuck it, Ricky will probably be watching the fight and telling everyone about how good Alvarez is looking.....

And thats exactly why its significant. But again, they dont care what your opinion is.

That's the point...this fight doesn't do that. It can't do that.

It can only show whether he's not.

When he starts to take fights that can show that, then you can talk about their significance.

Combined, Alvarez and JCC Jr. have about 80 fights between them...and individually, there's not that much signifcance to any of them.

I think, of the pair, Alvarez has shown more, stopping Baldy with a single hook is impressive, in anyones book. Its not stellar, but it hints of more to follow. More than getting into a war with John Duddy does, anyways.

This is exactly where I stand. Continuing to fight opponents on the level of MHatton, N'Dou, Baldomir, etc isn't going to prove that Alvarez is world-class - in fact, next weekend's fight is more of the same in regards to his level of opposition. Once he progresses, then his fights will become more significant.

Alvarez losing doesn't really change that dynamic because he hasn't yet made that impact on the sport and - as you've mentioned throughout the thread - the junior middleweight division, especially considering that even when weighing above 147, he's still fighting welterweights moving up.

He's just being sold as the sport's next big thing. Maybe he does become that, but if not, you simply move on to the next rising young talent, and preferably one who's already proven himself beyond the fringe contender level.

Canelo already is a superstar in Mexico. His numbers are incredible for somebody so young.
