So what's this "white" style and "black" style of fighting you ask?

Well, no race OWNS a way of fighting but traditionally we've seen fighting tendencies from prominant white fighters and prominent black fighters.

White fighters traditionally tend to be tough brawler types that are not afraid to get their hands dirty, so to speak. Think Gene Fulmer, Jack Dempsey, Rocky Marciano, Jake Lamotta, Alan Minter, Barry McGuidan, Jerry Quarry, Mickey Ward.

The typical "black" fighter is usually the speedy slickster that likes to throw combinations and move and looks flash. They tend to try to avoid being hit. Think Sugar Ray Robinson, Ray Leonard, Meldrick Taylor, Zab Judah, Floyd Mayweather, Pernell Whitaker, Cassius Clay, Thomas Hearns.

Of course there are always exceptions to every rule, and that's what this thread is about. :fightme:

Which white fighters fight/fought like a typical black fighter?

    I nominate:

    Joe Calzaghe
    Willie Pep

Those boyz have afros and jheri curls growing on the inside if you know what I'm sayin' :kidcool:

I don't think Martinez is 100% white. And Lucian Bute doesn't fight the least bit "black". Bute fights more European than anything.....more upright.

    Also, Paulie Malinaggie.

    Fights in the wrong style?

I thought I read he was at least using similar rhetoric as Hopkins though...he only loses to black fighters or something.

Paulie took it too far trying to film a Barbershop remake during a fight.

    Bute.

Low hands, slick, low output pot shotting counter puncher. He's as black as the night.

    Stop commenting on boxing please.

Gotta say, I think the, "black style," is more mythical stereotype than it is reality.

Mexicans as brawlers, on the other hand...

I'd like to take this opportunity to point out that Joe Calzaghe wasn't 'slick'. He was a volume puncher with good feet.

He was a level of genius all of his own. I can't think of a black fighter who fought remotely like him.

They were both defensive genius' - beyond that not terribly similar. I should disclaim at this point that Locche is my fave fighter in history so further discussion may get hyperbolic....

Calzaghe is as slick as they come. Fast, great combination puncher and mover, master of turning and pivotting...adding a little showboating in there as well.

    Bad Bad boy! :bears:

No, Floyd is slick. He's a guy who's so difficult to hit and so accurate he reduces his opponents standard output by about 40-50%. Then STILL throws less shots than his opponents and manages to outland them 2-1. That's slick.

When old man Hops isn't too badly physically outgunned in terms of his oponents volume and ability to apply it he can pull a similar trick.

OTOH, Joe was a volume puncher who sweated out wins with fitness. He'd win fights by plain out throwing his opponent with indiscriminate shots, throwing shit against the wall. Meanwhile he got hit with solid shots in every round. Joe was quick, fit & tough.

Having fastish feet and good reflex' doesn't = slick.

    How retarded.

If we are going to include Bute we might as well add just about every fighter who doesn't fight with a high guard.

Of course Locche fought "black", he got out of the way of punches.

Movement, significantly less upright, speed, elusiveness and defensively sound.

Obviously a counterpuncher. Potshotters. Weak lead punches, strong counter punches.

    Strong rear hand.

    Headhunter.

    Point fighters.

Thats just a typecast though, don't put much into it myself.

^Lucian Bute you odious little fud.

That he doesn't tuck his chin behind his shoulder would disqualify Ali from having a 'black style'.

And I agree with Ramonza that the desingnation 'black style' isn't a very useful one, especially these days. The best black fighters tend to have outstanding hand speed thats really all that marks them out -that isn't a 'style'.

Was going to say, if Calzaghe is an accepted entry, I don't see how Bute doesn't fit the description as well. Granted, Calzaghe was a smarter (and better) fighter, but style-wise, Bute belongs in this discussion.
