Examples of fights where the PUNCH beat the CHIN!

Discussion in 'General Boxing Discussion' started by Destruction and Mayhem, Feb 23, 2011.

  1. The history of boxing is littered with examples of guys with great power meeting guys with solid chins, and the guy with the solid chin prevails (and usually by KO).

To refresh your memory examples of this are:

    Hagler-Hearns
    McCallum-Jackson
    Ali-Foreman
    Holyfield-Tyson
    Eubank-Benn

But what about examples where the punch truimphed (by KO) over the granite chin? Not as common.

    Examples:

    Corrales-Castillo 1
    Hearns-Duran

Any more? (Chin has to be GRANITE by reputation and evidence to qualify)

  2. Ugotabe Kidding

Ugotabe Kidding WBC Silver Diamond Emeritus Champ

    Lewis-Tyson
    Tito-Mayorga
    Pac-Morales

in all of these a big punch broke down a chin though obviously there was much more to these guys than just punch

  3. Nice examples. That's what I'm talking about.

Robinson-Fullmer II is definitely one such instance. You could add Robinson's stoppage of LaMotta to boot. Willard had a highly-respected jaw, which Dempsey decimated in timeless fashion. Louis broke down both Galento & Godoy --- two iron-jawed contenders.

McClellan & Jackson put on just such a show for this thread's purpose.

No doubt. Mayo was iron chinned going into that fight.

Hearns' chin was not solid. It was alright, but the guys usually couldn't reach it without running into a right hand from Hell first. That's like trying to reach up and touch the windshield of an oncoming train. You might touch it, but it's definitely gonna touch you first and so much harder that you will always regret it---if you live.

Here's an unusual case of a relatively light punch beating an excellent chin --- Ali-Quarry II. Quarry, or rather his whiskers, were evidently having an off-night for that one.

I would say Foreman-Chuvalo, getting back on topic, too. Chuvalo held his feet, but was pummeled bodily across the ring & reduced to cowering --- though he was lucid enough to protest the stoppage, impressively.

I would say no, personally --- just in the sense that Mosley has never struck me as a particuarly great puncher, at least, not above Lightweight.

Of course, his punch certainly beat Margarito's chin (with room to spare  ) that night.

Consider the source. He'll find a way to sneak Jones into ALL threads like these.

Mosley's a very underrated puncher, IMO. That's really the basis of his success.
