Lucian's upright and doesn't too a ton of counterpunching.

He's just versatile so he CAN counterpunch.

He also bangs to the body probably more than any fighter right now.

Not a potshotter. And to suggest he's low output is crazy

Calzaghe isn't a "black" fighter either.

I think he, Bute and Wlad and Vitali go into a type of neo-European hybrid style.

In Bute's last 3 fights he averaged less than 40 punches a round. His career average is under 50 & falling sharply as he & his opposition continues to improve. It's not at all uncommon for him to limit his opponents to single figures in connects. In fact it happens every other round at championship level. I've already explained my views on 'counter punching' today at length - IMO he's a pure bred counter puncher & a very 'slick' one.

Regardless, thank you for actually backing up an opinion with an argument and doing it without being snidey, dismissive or insulting.

He was fighting a pressure fighter in Andrade. He looked much different.

He led heavy against Miranda, finished him early.

And Brinkley I didn't see because Brinkley sucks and I didn't even know that fight was happening.

He looked much different against Andrade than he did against Berrio, Joppy, random boxer A.

As I said, I've already went through my opinions on what constitutes a counter puncher, in my book. Going backwards/forwards isn't the criteria, imo.

I don't really get that at all.

A counterpunch is when a guy throws at you, you block and/or avoid and counter. I don't think movement has anything to do with anything. Chavez would counter while moving forward, Pacquaio does.

Bute is an aggressive lead puncher, who mixes in counterpunching.

Just a very versatile and sound fighter.

Lead punchers dont average under 40 throws a round. Not if the label means anything useful in analyzing fights and fighters. You say he 'led heavy' against Miranda, yet he was out thrown in every single round. I think we best just agree to disagree on this on.

    How don't they?

Being first doesn't correlate to output.

If you throw 20 jab and right hands. Then back away. Does that make him a counter puncher?

You seem to be confusing aggression with style.

I can't even make head or tails of this post, after 4 reads. It could just have easily been written as a retort to your own position. Lets just agree to disagree. we're clearly aiming towards different criteria. Im aiming towards a taxonomy which helps in analyzing & picking fights - thats my interest right now. You're maybe looking for one which seems visually descriptive at some level. Either way we aren't gonna agree on this.

Bute doesn't fight in a black style at all

you can clearly see the euro influence in him.

I wouldn't say calzaghe had a black style either

Calzaghe doesn't fight "black" at all imo, for the reasons already stated in this thread.

+1 on Pirog and McCloskey, but I'm not really sure Bute or Martinez qualify.

'The rolling stones didn't play black music at all, you can clearly hear the London influence in them'.

This whole topic is a lemon (no offence sly, some threads just turn out this way).

Joe Calzaghe had what the racist Hopkins called a "loosey goosey style"

He fought very loose, hands down at times, even when fighting punchers.

agREED. Stafford has called him that more than once. I don't get it. Minter was more boxer than brawler and not a fighter i would lump in with Marciano and Dempsey.

well, he's probably not seen him fight or he just saw the Hagler fight where Minter had no choice but to exchange punches
