Rios fights at 135 but looks huge at the weight, Alvarez fights at 150, and to me looks fairly small for a welterweight, let alone junior middle. He's 5'8 and on the slender side.

At 147 they'd look the same size in the ring.

I think Rios would throw him an absolute beating.

I dont see Alvarez ever fighting at 147 again.

The majority of his career will be spent at 154.

Maybe so, but he is currently fighting at 150. He hasn't actually weighed in at 154.

So let's say he DID fight Rios at 147, even if those extra 3 pounds weakened him a bit. Who would you pick?

PS - I really don't see why he's fighting at 154. He looks pretty small for a welterweight, let alone jr middle.

I'd pick Alvarez unforuntely. Bam Bam is the MUCH better fighter, but make no mistake.... Alvarez is by FAR a larger man than Rios.

It's funny you should say that because one of the main reasons I made this thread is it occured to me these two look the same size.

Alvarez is listed at 5'8, fairly average build. Looks small for a welterweight.

Rios is listed at 5'9, and is only slightly more slender than Alvarez.

The only thing I can think of Rios is much better at making weight.

    Check out this pic

Look at Rios. For a 5'9 lightweight, he's fucking solidly built. A bit like JCL was at lightweight, who is also 5'9.

Now look at Alvarez, he is the same size.

I've never met Alvarez, therefore can't verify his height. But there is no way that Rios is 5'9"

Oh really? What would you estimate his height at?

He looks at least 5'8 IMO.

    Is Castillo a legit 5'9?

Alvarez by virtue of being much bigger.

Keep in mind, Castillo was crap above 135.

Again, the point of this thread is that they are actually a similar size.

What makes you think Alvarez is that much bigger? He might just have higher muscle density or be crap at making weight.

Ultimately, they are a similar height and similar build. Stick them in the ring together, and they'll look more or less the same size.

Yes and no. That's somewhat of an unfair statement, because by the time he could no longer make 135, he was borderline shot.

The fact that he came into the ring last night at damn near 170, and cause it would be impossible for him to fight any lower than 147.

Rios is a junior welter who fights at lightweight.

Alvarez within a year will be a full fledged junior middle.

I dont see the debate at all in size.

Its like saying Castillo was the same size as Vargas.

The shots Canelo KO'd Bumlomir with would starch Rios.

P4P... Rios is easily the better fighter right now, and probably for the future as well.

Wow, that is weird, he weighed almost 170 pounds?

And no it's nothing like saying Castillo was the same size as Vargas. Vargas was a solid 154 pounder. 5'10 with a fairly chunky frame (albeit soft looking body). He looked noticeably bigger than Castillo.

Even if Alvarez is indeed the heavier man (must have more muscle mass than he appears to, heavy bones etc, dunno, he looks small at the weight) do you not see my point?

I bet if you put the two in the ring together they'd look a similar size.

Just look at the photo above. Bearing in mind Alvarez is only 5'8, you think he looks like a jr middle? He'd be dwarfed by the likes of Tall Paul, Martinez, or even Cintron or Plasterito.

Yes, I think Canelo is a natural 154 pounder. He's simply a thicker, heavier boned man than Bam Bam.

Rios can still be elite at 140, but he wouldnt be any good at 147. Bam Bam depends on his size, and strength to be effective. At 140 he'll be in with guys roughly the same size as him. But welters are bigger.

Honestly, I don't disagree with what you say about Rios at all. I also think he'll only be effective at 135/140. Welters are bigger, and his style won't be as effective.

I guess what I am saying is two things. First, Alvarez sucks and Rios doesn't, second, Alvarez looks nothing like a jr middle to me.

Do you disagree that Alvarez would be dwarfed by the 4 fighters I mentioned?

I'm on the shy side of 5'10 and he's at least two inches shorter than me, perhaps more. Granted it was like three years ago, so maybe he grew an inch or two since then. But I don't remember him being much bigger than Acosta if at all, and Acosta is around 5'6 or 5'7, no more than that.

In height? Yes. In size? Not so much, against Cintron and Williams. Those guys are natural 147-154 pounders themselves.

Marvavilla is bigger. Martinez is a natural 154-160 pounder.

I agree with you that Alvarez could potentially find himself to be a man without a country. I don't get how he can't make 147; in fact it really makes me question his desire to train very hard.

People question how much work Chavez Jr is willing to put in (and rightfully so), but he's huge compared to Canelo.

With a full training camp, Alvarez should be able to fill out at welterweight. I don't see him having a lot of success at 154, especially once he's force to actually make weight as I seriously doubt the entire divison will agree to lower the limit to 150.

Yup... I dont see anyway that Rios is 5'9.

5'8 TOPS. But he seems like a legit 5'7.

But seeing fighters in person is the only TRUE way of getting an accurate read. For the record, I'm 5'10.

If not now... then I see him filling out to be a legit junior middle by time he's 23 or so.

But good point about his training habits. His hands were low, and he seemed a bit gassed late against Hatton.

Honestly.... I dont see any star talent in him. He has above average handspeed, and good, but not great power.... but thats about it.

Its not like he's ever gonna develop true speed, one punch power, and the reflexes to avoid shots.

Prior to last night, I thought he was a bigger puncher than what he apparently is.

You know after MWS said that, I went back and checked a few other fighters just to see how off their listings are.

I can't believe that Zab is listed as 5'7 1/2". seeing that reminds me of the old practice (or maybe they still do it) when a college baller would magically enjoy a growth spurt in their senior year, more specifically before the NBA draft. Goes go from 6'5 to 6'8 and suddenly back down to 6'6 all in a matter of months.

Anyway, I refuse to believe that Zab is any more than 5'6, but seeing shit like that now lets me realize why people would think Rios is bigger than he actually is.

What the hell were we talking about before this anyway?

Jake sees what I'm saying. You'll see when he gets in the ring with a proper 154 pounder, he'll look fucking small.

And yes, I think it's possible he doesn't train well, or isn't good at cutting weight.

Like Jake says, Chavez JR is massive compared to Alvarez. Looks a couple of weight divisions bigger.

Yup. I forgave the N'Dou fight because N'Dou came for a paycheck that night and nothing more. Alvarez looked like crap in that fight and was also gassed towards the end, but was the only one fighting.

Not the case last night. Hatton was there to get got, and Alvarez couldn't do anything with it. At 147, it might've been a different story. But that 3 lb buffer (really 4 1/2 since he was over the contracted weight) actually appeared to soften him up.

Like you, I wasn't impressed in the slightest last night. In fact, the only two fights in which he showed me something in the past year or so was against Baldimor and Cuello.

Oh yes and I'm come to realise it's standard fare to give fighter at least an extra inch. So it's possible Rios is 5'8 or 5'7. People say Manny is only 5'5 or so.

Funnily enough British fighters I've met, Watson, Eubank etc are the same height they are listed at. Once I saw Eubank looking about 6 foot though, he must have been wearing lifts

I totally agree. Along with the undersizedness, this is what makes me genuinely believe Rios would throw him a beating. Hatton was right there to be hit all night, Hatton is not world class, and like you say, he couldn't really do anything. His power looked average at best.

I dunno who the hell they're gonna put this ginger in with to preserve his record.

Maybe if Victoria Ortiz takes a bad enough beating against Berto, they'll make an Ortiz-Alvarez matchup.

Ok see this goes in the opposite direction. Meeting Eubank and Benn (on separate occasions) made me realize that I wasn't truly 5'10. Both are taller than me, though strangely Eubank seemed much taller. Maybe he was wearing lifts or platforms that day as well

Interesting, you noticed the same thing.

I haven't met Benn, but I've met Watson and he seemed to be around his listed 5'9.

With Eubank, one time I was standing next to him and he literally seemed 6 foot. Another time he seemed about an inch taller than me, so more like his listed 5'10 (so yeah, it wouldn't surprise me at all if he wore lifts sometimes  )

Also, I've been friends with Chris's brother Pete for years, and he is taller than his listed 5'6, no question. Actually seems closer to 5'8.

It's weird Benn seemed taller than you, because he's always been listed at 5'9 right?

Just bumping this thread to see if anyone has changed their mind.

I still pick Rios to beat the shit out of Alvarez at 147.
