No. The two weeks is what Mayweather had agreed to during the first round of negotiations months later. After those negotiations fell apart, Mayweather basically said "Fuck Pac, we tried to compromise but now if he wants to fight, he better forget about stopping testing 2 weeks out." Then months later when negotiations started again, they said "2 weeks out" and the Mayweathers said "fuck you" and Arum tried to spin it as "oh, we agreed to Floyd's demands but he doesn't want to fight.. "

It's a bunch of bullshit and everyone in the boxing world knows it.

And this is coming from a guy who was a fan of Pacquiao from back when he destroyed Ledwaba, and who was one of the few who picked Pacquiao to beat Barrera by KO. I stopped being a fan right around the time when he turned into the biggest fucking fraud in the sport. His refusal to undergo a perfectly reasonable drug testing protocol only adds fuel to the fire.

That isnt what i remembered happening.

  3. Yeah but being in a competitive fight doesn't mean the opponent was a huge test, on paper, any more than beating an opponent easily suddenly makes the opponent a BUM.

Marquez would give Pacquiao hell any day of teh week, Welterweight, Lighweight whatever.....but Marquez fights another guy who beats him easily (wont mention his name) and suddenly Marquez is a washed up bum.

That's the problem with a lot of you guys that post here (I didn't say all)

JMM is not a bum, he's just not a welterweight and had never fought that high previously. It's also worth noting that his opponent whom I will not name, came in way over the contracted weight. Talk about being at a disadvantage.

  5. His opponent, who will not be named, didn't beat him using weight....he beat him with skill. If they had met at 135lbs the fight would have been no different, stylewise.

    But we digress...

Please stop saying this. Yes Floyd would have still won, but stop saying the weight made no difference, because it ALWAYS does. Hence weight classes.

  7. Weight classes separate the naturally bigger men from the naturally smaller men...because with all else qual, size would win. What I'm saying is:

    1. All else was NOT equal
    2. Floyd isn't naturally much bigger than Marquez

But for argument sake let's say that Floyd was more the natural Welterweigth at the time when they fought, and Marquez wasn't. Was teh fight itself about weight and strength and power? Or was it abot the bigger man fighting like the smaller man and moving and potshotting and outspeeding.

    THINK man, THINK!

    Lastly...

You think Carnera's 60 lbs advantage over Louis gave him any advantage considering the skill gap between them?

Still have MAD respect for you though, you know that! :partie:

Are you seriously saying having JMM fight at his highest weight ever and then coming in over the agreed limit had no benefit for Floyd?

  9. Hex-One

    Hex-One "Twinkle Toes" McJack

It did benefit Floyd, but I seriously doubt the outcome being any different even if Floyd was able to make 140. The skill level that night was just amazing. JMM had no answers.

I agree but downplaying the obvious disadvantages and acting like FM beat JMM at his best is dishonest. If a certain Filipino pulled the same trick it would be highlighted at every opportunity.

Just be consistent, that's all I'm asking. Blind fanboyism is not conducive to good debate.

He looked much bigger than Marquez, don't be absurd. He's a naturally bigger man.

Marquez is a career FEATHERWEIGHT, Floyd is a career WELTERWEIGHT. Floyd has been a welterweight for about 7 years.

Would Floyd have won if it had been at 135 or they were the same natural size? yes, because he is a better fighter, but it would have been much closer.

    That fight means nothing.

I thought this thread was about Cotto vs Mayorga? What happened?

Cotto refused to do a stare down with Mayorga at the press conference today. Cotto told Mayorga to go take pictures with his mother.

Now we are back on track. Discuss.

Cotto is a moron! He needs to start standing up to Mayorga and stop acting like a female. :fightme:

I completely disagree with this. That fight looks the exact same at any weight, just like Marquez-Pacquiao looks the same at any weight. Floyd didn't impose his size on JMM, he just schooled him and Marquez didn't even win one second of that fight. I would bet money on that exact same version of Marquez giving Pacquiao hell at 147.

Oh and re: the contractual weight, they made an agreement for a catchweight of 145, that's not the welterweight limit. Floyd came in at the welterweight limit and it cost him $600k, his prerogative. It's certainly better than Manny's practice of demanding catchweights to weaken his opponents. Remember when Roach said they'd fight Shane at 142?

Marquez struggling to Gain weight while Mayweather not even attempting to lose will always be an issue. Not saying Marquez loses, but to say it doesnt matter is ridiculous.

OK, if Marquez does fight Pacquiao at 147, do you want to have a straight bet with me on it?

  21. loadedgloves

    loadedgloves "Twinkle Toes" McJack

Sure. Of course, it's never going to happen. Pac has been ducking the rubbermatch since he moved up to fight David Diaz.

  22. The Genius

    The Genius DEMONRY!!

How can it be considered ducking when he has fought the guy twice?

  23. loadedgloves

    loadedgloves "Twinkle Toes" McJack

Because the results of the first two fights were inconclusive (I felt Marquez won both) and there was great demand for a third fight in order to establish who the better fighter was?

Well wasnt the fight not happening a result of Marquez's management aka Nacho? I thought Marquez priced himself out of the fight. Maybe Jake can shed some light on it for us.

I'll be super bummed if Cotto somehow loses this fight.

There's no reason he should. He's vastly more skilled than Mayorga, he's a more disciplined athlete (the term athlete used to described Mayorga is indeed loose), more consistent, more dedicated, and more talented.

The only potential for a Mayorga victory is his ability to punch hard from odd angles, under-pinned by his knuckles. that Larry Merchant describes as a mountain range. Let's not forget, Mayorga was the only guy to stop Forrest, and in the process, absorved quite a bit of punishment.

Anyway, TR is out to rebuild Cotto as a supersize, first with his title winning effort against Foreman, now with a defense of that title against sn oppponent everyon knows of, and perhaps a second chance at Pacquiao, who no doubt has his sights on a title in yet another weight class.

Cotto may very well lose, though. Even taking into account hs superior skills. Mayorga embodies anti-skill.

Good post. I agree, the danger here is not Mayorga, but the way he throws his punches at odd angles with power. Cotto has proven to have a decent chin but you just never know. If he some how manages to seriously hurt Cotto we may indeed have a new champion. Miguel should win, he has just about ever advantage on his side. If this goes as predicted/planned Cotto should knock him out within 6 rounds or so.

Aye, why get involved in Mayorga's pantomime? I wouldn't if I was Cotto.

(Though if the rumours are true, Big boy Miggy should enjoy these 3m nose to nose deep eye contact sessions with buff bad boys more than most.:limp:)

Nacho sabotaged the timing of the second fight - it should've been about three years earlier than when it actually took place, though it actually worked out of the better. Marquez was able to reinvent himself, and what we were left with in 2008 was a genuine P4P matchup, as opposed to "just" a rematch.

However, Top Rank has deliberately avoided a third fight for no other reason than to stick it to Golden Boy and to Marquez, whom it used to promote. Now that Marquez is declaring himself a free agent, Top Rank is suddenly interested.

It's not accurate to say that Pacquiao is "ducking" Marquez, though if he really wanted the fight then he could've done a hell of a lot more to force the issue w/ Uncle Bob. It is accurate to say that Top Rank has frozen out Marquez, though Golden Boy has returned the favor by keeping the lightweight title in house from 2007 onward.

Why? He already proved his point a few weeks ago when he humiliated Mayorga during the press tour. Unlike Mayorga, Cotto understands there is a time and place for everything.

I can't wait for Sunday morning, just for all of this bullshit to be over and for Cotto to be able to properly resume his career.

    Smart move by Uncle Bob.

Uh uh Cotto is scared of Mayorga, let´s buy the PPV.

As usual Mayorga will make out with his opponent after the fight.
