Perhaps U just MISSED it, but PLENTY of Boxing Fans have Thought Cotto would Beat Margarita EVER SINCE the Revelation of his Plaster Wraps, which was like EARLY 2009....Mayorga has Absolutely NATHAN to Do w/Any Thoughts of Cotto BEATING Margarita... REED:hammert:
Mate, firstly that fight was 3 years ago, and Tony is now north of 30 which for a swarmer is old. He's also had 2 severe beatings since then. Cotto may have declined a bit too, but not as much, IMO. In their actual fight Cotto was WINNING well until the wraps (we can safely assume given the weird facial damage & the Mosley incident) took over. Without the wraps I think the odds of Tony doing the damage which turned that fight around are less than 50%. Aka Cotto would probably have won. So the match ups you mention have NOTHING to do with me rethinking anything. I haven't even seen the Mayorga fight, it has less than no bearing on my opinion. If anything the trouble I've read that he had might count against him. I've consistently been Margarito's biggest admirer/defender (purely as a fighter) here this side of LL.
Both guys have to be diminished relative to what they were going into the first fight. No two ways about it.
Can I also add to Sly, in my own defence im one of the guys LEAST prone to write a guy off on the back of a defeat. EVER. Especially when it's to the p4p number 1 guy.
I'm not confident about Cotto beating Margarito. The pressure Antonio applies is still a big concern. Head punches wont do much effect on him. Cotto must find a way to attack the body and get his respect.
C'mon Sly, you make it seem like their first fight was 10 rounds to 0 at the time of the stoppage. That fight was literally the last time Margarito looked like a live fighter, never mind a top one. I don't deny that Cotto is on the decline, but Margarito has looked far worse in his last three fights, and that's including his one tune-up win. Plus, he'll be entering this fight coming off of an eight-month layoff and having not won a fight in more than a year - with his last truly relevant win having come three years ago (against Cotto). Right now, the only thing Margarito owns over Cotto is scoreboard. That, along with the handwraps angle (although it was still never proven in the Cotto fight), makes the rematch intriguing and reason to not dismiss Margarito outright. But nowhere does it state that the fight always turns out the way it did on July 26, 2008.
If the fight were tomorrow and Hut Hut was soliciting predictions, I'd pick him to win. But in general discussion, not outright.
I disagree. He managed to hurt Manny Pac at some point in there fight. Like him or hate him he has heavy hands. And even after the vicious beating he took from Pac, he was still marching forward. I think stylistically Margarito is bad for Cotto no matter how you look at it.
Come on Hex. If you thought Mayorga was going to whup Cotto, you damn sure think Margarito will. Hex in Margarito's Prime he kills Cotto right?
There aren't that many Top Rank fighters he can headline a pay per view against. If Margarito's finished, then Arum needs to cash him out...this presents an opportunity to do that in a ppv fight with some backstory.
Mayorga had a punchers chance against Cotto, I clearly said unless he lands a lucky shot Cotto was gonna stop him. As for Margarito Stylistically he will give Cotto fits again. Watch Margarito/Pacman. Explain to me how is Cotto gonna stop Antonio from coming forward for 12 rounds?
It clearly mentions PRIME. WTF are you talking about? I think most of the forum agrees, A prime Mayorga kicks Cotto's ass.
:atu: What do you base that on now? Cotto was in control of the fight. What gave you this indication? Because Mayorga landed a few punches on Cotto?
Wanna make a poll? I'm confident most of the posters here would pick Prime Mayorga to beat Cotto @147.
Go ahead. But that doesnt answer my question. What do you base that on? Because Cotto fucked Mayorga up on saturday and both are clearly passed their prime.
