    Hmmm...

Think this fight is something like RJJ vs Hop 1.

RJJ is about 50 levels above Martinez...and that fight was 8-4, 9-3....for RJJ

    Hopkins by late TKO

    Not really.

Martinez is too awkward for Hopkins and Hopkins struggles mightily with handspeed.

Hopkins would slowly grind Maravilla down and mug him.

I think Hopkins would win, but this is completely over the top.

I would pick Martinez over every fighter Hopkins beat at 160 without hesitation.

Thinking they are in a different class is ludicrous. It would actually be a very close fight.

Would you pick a Maravilla several years removed from his prime against Tarver or Jean Pascal? I wouldn't.

I think he's just trying to illustrate the point that Bernard is better than Sergio.

I'd like to point out that Martinez would be the best middleweight Hopkins has ever beaten

That's fair. Still, take the hype Martinez is getting right now, and multiply it by 500, and you have a middleweight Felix Trinidad.

That seems about right. I don't think Martinez has a style to beat Hops. Hell, Paul Williams might have given him as tough a fight with that indiscriminate volume of his.

    That's irrelevant.

We're talking about a fight at 160. Martinez is a much, much better fighter than Tarver and Pascal, but they are significantly bigger.

martinez doesn't have the reflexes nor speed to remotely resemble the problems Hopkins had with Jones the first time out.

Guys are going way overboard here. At this rate martinez's name will be added to the "overrated" thread by next week.

See steve_dave's comment. The fact that Hopkins was able to perform feats such as this illustrates that he is in a different league as a fighter.

Again, let's not get carried away here.

I've been a Hopkins supporter for years (though admittedly, kind of gone off him now, partly because of the JC fight) and was one of the few that thought he would school that oaf Trinidad.

But those wins are mainly impressive due to his age. Which yes, is incredible.

I'm still astounded that Hopkins can perform the way he can at age 46, it's truly exceptional, in the same way it's exceptional that a former flyweight like Pacquiao can slap welterweights around the ring like heavybags.

But again, it's irrelevant, your argument doesn't make sense, it has no bearing on a fight between these guys at middleweight.

    You could just as easily say;

"Well at age 46 Hopkins is beating guys like Pascal, and at age 36 Jones was getting knocked out cold by guys like Tarver and Johnson, see, it demonstrates they are different leagues as fighters".

But of course, it doesn't. It really has no relevance to a fight between the two in their primes, because they did fight, and Jones won.

Also to be honest, I find what Martinez is doing now to be just as impressive as Hopkins. Let's not forget Martinez is 36 years old, and looked significantly smaller than Tall Paul and Pavlik, and even looked slightly smaller than Zurik (though evidently was the stronger, more powerful man).

And Tarver has often been very lacklustre in his career, only giving the occasional top tier performance, and Pascal is nothing special at world level.

To be fair he did pick Ray Robinson over Yuri Foreman by split decision.
