Wow these guys were incredible fighters. I don't disagree with the decision because Hagler outscored and outworked Duran but I noticed that the smaller much past his prime Duran was the only one who did damage in the fight. Hagler didn't land a single clean lick that did any damage but got hit solid and felt some serious pain multiple times by Duran. Sorry to make a pointless thread but I wanted to give a shout out to these two great ring warriors of which in my opinion (Hagler) was the most badass man to ever hold and title and (Duran) the scrappiest man to ever grace the sport.
What would you say is more valuable? A competitve loss to Marvin Hagler, or a decision win vs. Kevin Johnson?
That fight was 30 years ago. Why a thread on it here? What happened was that Hagler was scared of Duran, plain and simple. I know as I was there at Caesars for that fight when I was stationed at Nellis AFB. Ronald Reagan was in his first term as President then, and many posters here were not even born; that is how long ago it was.
Since the poster dredged this old fight up, here is a pic of them in 2007 at the IBHOF. I will say that Duran has lost over 100 pounds in the past year and looks fantastic now as this pic was taken before his dramatic weight gain and subsequent weight loss.
I always respect your input. But being at Caesars doesn't give you evidence that Hagler was scared of Duran. Is being in the arena some telescope to emotion? In fact, that's a ridiculous comment. Here is a guy that traveled to Alan Minter's very hostile back yard and walked immediately to him and began bombing. Here is a guy that stepped right to a red hot Mustafa Hamsho and never blinked. Here is a guy that rushed right into the middle of the tornado that was Tommy Hearns and never even batted an eyelash in the most famous 7 minutes and 52 seconds of slugging in boxing history. Here is a guy that stood bomb for bomb with Mugabi and wasn't the one that dropped. And he was AFRAID of Duran? Ok. I'll take your word for it because you were at Caesars and I only watched it on TV.
I think a shutout over a very dangerous, unbeaten top contender is more valuable than getting brutally whupped by a past-prime champ
You got half of that right. Marvin was certainly "going away" from an overblown and over the hill lightweight.
That fight was four decades ago..how am I supposed to remember my scorecard? I thought Duran wanted to fight for the most part, and Marvin did not, at least not until the final third of the fight when he realized he may be screwing up big time. Hagler was one of my favorites then, and I was rooting for him, but he was a big disappointment that night. Duran called him a "pussy" at Cleopatra's Barge afterwards, as he was really upset as he was so emotional. It left a bitter taste in my mouth, I can recall that much.
Man, sometimes I am not sure what people see. When I think back about Hagler-Duran all I remember is a very close fight for 11-12 rounds in which Duran's under estimated defense gave Hagler big problems. But I also clearly remember the dogged warrior that was Hagler gritting his teeth and fighting like the normal tenacious beast that he was to win the last 3 and fairly getting the nod. It was closer than expected given the fact that Duran was fighting at a buck 60, but it never, ever crossed my mind as a robbery-type decision. I always thought it was clear.
TV, in my experience, is the best way to score a fight... unless you're in the first few rows. For example, I had Margarito winning all but one or two rounds vs. Cotto from my vantage point at the MGM.
Because this is a boxing forum where people talk about boxing. I wasn't even alive when this fight happened but I just recently saw it and wanted to make a thread out of respect for these two guys. (Also was curious what the rest of you thought about the fight). That's pretty much all.
really? i wasnt ringside for that fight but had a pretty good view from the stands and thought cotto was winning most of the early rounds
Go watch the last 3 rounds of that fight again and tell me Marvin was afraid. And call Duran bloated, washed up or whatever, but he was coming off two of the more impressive stoppages of his career over Cuevas and Moore. In fact, the Duran that stepped in the ring against Hagler was in good shape. He was probably in as good as shape as any point in his post Leonard II career.
hegman had duran winning the fight. that, there, eliminates any credibility when speaking on the fight.
Honestly, I was a senior in high school at the time and I remember the fight and the aftermath clearly. There wasn't huge outrage at the decision. As I said, it was shocking to me how close it was, but the decision wasn't even considered controversial at the time.
I had a decent view, too. Was in the $500 seats. Looked like Margarito was walking through him from my angle. I was having a lot of fun at the time though, was my first major bout.
Please continue to make these type of threads. Any reason to rewatch an old fight and get fresh perspectives is a good thing in my estimation.
Really we should do something like nominate a particular fight from history, get as many of us to watch as possible and then get the breakdown at the end. Like a book club but in this case, more of a fight club.
You need to stay in Libya, or go back to Iran. Since some of you posters have an issue with a fight that happened 30 years ago, I will suggest you find out when the next meeting of the NSAC is and state your case there. First of all; you are going to be laughed at by the commission and then physically removed by Las Vegas Metro, or the constable serving as sergeant at arms on that particular evening. If you have the guts to start something with them (which I doubt you have) you have bought yourself a one way ticket to lock up in Clark County Detention Center.
