When was the last time a highly regarded MMA Champion was absolutely destroyed like Jones destroyed Rua last Saturday night?

And I'm not looking for Rampage starching Liddell or Serra landing a lucky punch on GSP. I mean an actual methodical beatdown that left the champion emotionally, mentally and physically wrecked?

    Let's hear them.......

Cain vs. Lesnar. Cain took away Brock's greatest weapon (wrestling) and beat him into the fetal position. Brock also has a scar on his face to serve as a constant reminder of the beating he took.

Good one. I know people will dismiss this in retrospect and not call Franklin a highly regarded Champion. But, at the time, he was.

I guess I have a new question of the day. When the hell was Babalu highly regarded? Beating Bobby Southworth for a vacant SF Title doesn't really make you highly regarded.

And also, I assume you mean the 3rd Aoki-Hansen fight? If so, NO.

Yeah, in their third fight Hellboy was champ. Oddly enough he became champ by beating Aoki to a pulp in his previous fight.

And Serra-GSP was hardly a lucky punch.

Serra beat the hell out of him.

Babalu was not highly regarded at the time Mousasi beat him. He was old and way past it.

Aoki-Hansen is marginal because Shinya actually owned him in the 3rd fight so I won't disagree.

But the favorite, Mousasi, beating a crappy Babalu absolute isn't a good example.

I guess if you only count the last 20 seconds after GSP was wobbled. GSP was easily out striking Serra before the shot that rocked him.

Ummm, Hughes was the champion in that fight and successfully defended his title.

And it was a relatively even affair and a good fight until Penn tired.

I don't think even Serra himself would say he was dominating GSP before that punch. In fact, I think most people use this fight to describe how anything can happen with 4oz gloves.

Yeah I don't really like the use of "lucky punch" but Serra did get lucky in the sense that he caught GSP just right and managed to jump on him.

For sure, I wouldn't call it lucky neither. Serra landed a nice punch and jumped on the situation.

I dunno... when you try to punch someone in the face, and you end up punching them in the face, I have a hard time calling it lucky.

Yep, that's exactly why I hate the term. Every knockout punch involves a little luck..

That's a great example in my book. Again, it's easy to look back and completely dismiss Sylvia. But at the time Couture was supposed to be too old and small to beat Sylvia.

And Couture dominated him. In many ways Couture basically ruined him..

he did the same vs. gonzaga too. i mean, couture was the champ going in, but gonzaga was highly regarded after nearly decapitating crocop.

Man, you ain't kidding. I just KNEW, I didn't think, but rather KNEW that Couture was going to get raped by Gonzaga after watching Gabriel take Mirko's head off.
