Im Duran's biggest fan, but Hagler won that fight. Duran held his own until the championship rounds and Hagler pulled away & won it fair and square. As losing performances go it's one of histories most impressive efforts, though considering how far and long from prime, vs one the best ever at a weight 4 above his best, etc
Who said they had an issue with the fight? And why would people go to an athletic commission to give their opinion about the result of a fight that happened in the '80s? Karl, that doesn't make much sense to me.
he deserves it I'm sick of people coddling this guy it's outrageous... no one else has acted out as much as him, gone out of his way to insult other posters, start shit and just be a general crybaby hypocrite... "you're a good dude, Karl" ... "I like your contributions" based on WHAT? WHAT contributions? Amateurish fluff pieces about C-Level fighters without even the slightest hint of journalistic ethics or objectivity?? Rude, completely unprovoked random accusations of ignorance or cowardice directed at people?? The total inability to intelligently debate ANYthing? This guy is unintelligent, unstable, unreasonable and he ruins virtually every thread he participates in... why do people go out of their way to make friends with him? "Oh, Karl didn't completely bite my head off for no reason the last two times I gave an honest, informed opinion... I guess he's a GOOD GUY after all" bunch of nonsense... the guy is a walking Teratoma
"You're so awesome, to what do you attribute your awesomness?" "You're the best fighter out there, is it frustrating not getting big fights because is everybody is so scared of you?" "If i suck your cock could you please cum in my mouth?"
One of my favorite fights to watch. 15 rounds of steady, action-packed, techincal brilliance. And also some of the most glaring evidence that styles make fights, when you consider the outcomes of Duran/Hearns and Hagler/Hearns.
That must have been awesome to have been at that fight. Gotta give you props for having been a dedicated fan as long as you have (longer than some of us have been alive). As you pointed out, some of us are younger than you, and would not have had the chance to be there, let alone the opportunity. So forgive us if it's old news to you, but for me, this is exactly the kind of fight that deserves revisiting, whether it's to celebrate it, analyze it, or in your case, reflect on it.
Reminiscing Very well put. Some of the posters here with the potty fingers will type junk they will never say to my person, BTW.:nono: It was an almost surreal night in the old stadium in the parking lot to be sure. When I went back some years later; I removed a bolt from the ring and still have it in my possession, a small period curio from a time long gone. Burt Reynolds and Tom Selleck were shooting craps in the casino, and the prevalent attitude was not if Hagler was going to knock him out, but rather when he was going to get him. Manos de Piedra put on his most macho display, but the judges did not think it was enough. Karl
I agree. Hagler wasn't afraid of Duran. I just think he found out he couldn't out-muscle Duran, and that being too aggressive meant getting countered with shots he wasn't willing to take.
I always regard Marvins win over Duran as a knock against Marvin rather than a + for Duran. I think the fighters that Marvin wanted to be compared to- Sugar Ray Robinson, Dick Tiger, Monzon, etc...would have gotten Duran out of there. Marvin was a complex man so its hard to know how he saw it, but Goodie Petronelli telling Marvin to "loosen up, you don't have to knock him out every round" is disconcerting. Why would Hagler fight that tight against a former 135lbr?
the former 135er stuff is a little weak dude was THE welterweight champion of the world and a champion at 154... he had just put on a remarkable display against Moore, a strong, solid young guy, dominated him from start to finish let's not act like this way De La Hoya-Gatti, here and it's not ANY former 135 pounder... its a guy who had an IMMENSE reputation, a guy Hagler looked up to, a HUGE name... I could see a lot of fighters being too wound up in that situation... Duran fought a slick, fight, answering with his right hand, being defensively outstanding... Hagler clearly didnt expect him to do that
Really? I am going to give you that opportunity, asshole. I'll be here tomorrow at noon: You bring your filthy mouth ass there, and it's game over for you, little man. Marcus Johnson will be sparring Alfonso Lopez, Johnson fights April 9th on Shobox while Lopez fights Kelly Pavlik next on Pacquiao-Mosley: and I'll beat his ass right after they are through. This little weasel started it, Andrew. I am going to finish it and him once and for all.
