For those doubting Duran's prowess as a legitimate contender to Hagler's title at 160, why not use the benefit of hind-sight to take into account Duran's subsequent victory over Barkley at 160, a man who had just got done beating Hearns?
The way we pick the fights for discussion could be based on the current date. An important fight that happened in the final week of March, of any year, for example, could be what we start with?
Uh, my point is the expectation that Hagler would've walked through Duran, especially given the benefit of hind-sight, is unrealistic. It's a response to those characterizing Duran as an unworthy opponent for Hagler, that Hagler should not have had any trouble with him.
If you haven't already, you should also check out Duran/Barkely too for a good performance by Duran at 160. What's notable about Duran and the success he had at 160 and even 154, is that he had lost much of his speed by then, but managed through timing (counter-punching), combination punching, and intelligence to be at times victorious and always formidable.
One of Hagler's most disappointing performances. Probably the fore-runner of his career in that regard, until Leonard. How long does anyone think that Duran would have lasted in there with Monzon? He'd have been diced, boxed, & shipped back home along the Panama canal...
I disagree. For one, I don't think Monzon would've had an easy time with Duran. I think Duran's instincts and timing could've been very effective against the often predictable Monzon. And for another, I think it's only fair to take into account that styles (and consequently physical attributes) make fights. Monzon would've had a giant height advantage over Duran that Hagler simply didn't have. That's not to take anything away from Monzon, or to give undue credit to Hagler. But it is a reason not penalize Hagler because he had more difficulty with Duran than you think Monzon would've.
I don't know, but considering Duran's extreme durability and the amount of lesser boxers Monzon managed to go the full distance with the statement seems to be very bold to me.
I've heard many people say that Duran's success in boxing was because he was so fierce and confident but in my opinion this fight really revealed that the truth to Duran's success is the guy was extremely hard to hit clean, a boxing master who was also an excellent puncher. He seems to have 3 major weapons, a right hand (his best in my op) a left hook to the body (sometimes he'll step into the southpaw stance and really rip one in if his opponent lingers inside to long without pushing him off balance), and uppercuts that he can throw from any angle inside. Hagler is just a war horse plain and simple, tough, strong, ambidextrious, with conditioning that could win an iron man triathalon. I think that Duran's head movement combined with his balance (meaning he will counter with power) is what made Hagler so tight in the early rounds. Hagler overcame this by pushing the pace and using his superior strength to keep Duran off balance inside and winning rounds especially in the second half of the fight.
Funny thing about Monzon is that eevryone liked to call him predictable, but no one could deal with him. This isn't like Vitali Klitschko, either, where he's fighting complete trash. Monzon took out the best of a fine era. Monzon towered over Duran, but Hagler had a big, big reach advantage over Duran --- it didn't come to the fore as it should've. I take your point about styles, but I'm just making the point that Monzon was a better fighter, & Champion, than Hagler ever was.
Wow I couldn't disagree more strongly. I could maybe see giving Duran 5 rounds in that fight. Maybe. Winning after 10? I just can't see it.
I'm about a foot taller than you, faggot I'll be in Southington, CT all day tomorrow... why don't you come here and I'll splatter the half of a Cerebellum that you have in lieu of a brain all over the fucking sidewalk Pussy
I remember the first time watching this I couldn't believe how tentative Hagler was, I believe Duran was the first guy to go the distance in Hagler's MW title reign
