He passed away early this morning. He was 88.

Clancy began training young amateurs at the PAL boxing gym in Queens, New York and eventually rose to prominence as one of boxing’s great boxing trainers and managers. During his career Clancy worked with Ralph "Tiger" Jones, Rodrigo Valdes, Juan LaPorte, Johnny Persol, Jorge Ahumada, Harold Weston, Tom Bethea, Jerry Quarry, Gerry Cooney, Oscar De La Hoya and Hall of Famers Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman and Ken Buchanan. However, he is best known for his 20-year association with legendary Hall of Famer Emile Griffith, whom Clancy and Howie Albert guided to the welterweight and middleweight crowns. In 1967 and 1973, the Boxing Writers Association of America named him the Manager of the Year. From 1978 - 1981, Clancy was matchmaker for Madison Square Garden Boxing. He was also one of the premiere boxing analysts on MSG Network, CBS and HBO in the 1980s and 90s. In 1983, the Boxing Writers Association of America presented him with the Sam Taub Award for Excellence in Broadcasting Journalism.

“Gil Clancy was one of boxing’s truly great minds,â€￾ said Hall of Fame Executive Director Edward Brophy. “As a trainer and manager he was held in the highest regard by his peers. The Hall of Fame is saddened by the loss of our friend.â€￾

In 1993, Clancy was elected into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Wow. I knew he was pushing on, never knew he was 88. I will always remember when he said that him and Jerry had a plan for Frazier, that Jerry was supposed to slide off to the left to avoid Joes left, but that Jerry "like the thick-headed Irish man he was, walked straight into Joe" to prove how tough he was.

Gil also unfairly accepted blame for Oscar blowing it vs Trinidad. He said he always reminded fighters that they "needed the 12th" but that he forgot to tell Oscar. I think he just looked at Oscars winded ass and decided it was a waste of his fucking time.

I always liked hearing him on broadcats, he had one of those old-timey New York accents that you don't really here anymore, reminded me of my older relatives.

    A fine trainer as well.

    RIP

I didn't know he was this old, but apparently he got to live a long and happy life. Also, he was a great broadcaster

Great job by Clancy in that fight. He was telling Tim Ryan that Mugabi was setting Hagler up for an uppercut. And minutes later, guess what, Mugabi lands a horrendous uppercut.

The dude absolutely had the best insight of anyone I've ever heard commentate a fight.

RIP. I liked his commentary on HBO and he was a knowledgeable guy who cared about the sport.
