Floyd Mayweather owes $3.4 million in taxes; IRS' latest lien may push him back into ring

Uncle Sam wants You, Floyd Mayweather.

Here comes another April 15, and with it the nagging issue of paying taxes, or at least paying them in what most of us would consider timely fashion. Mayweather owes a tidy sum of income tax from 2009, it turns out, andthe last time he got in a year's arrears, he kicked rear to pay it off, namely Juan Manuel Marquez's.

If that trend continues, and it probably will, Mayweather lace up the gloves soon and satisfy two ticking clocks at once, the one the feds have on his income, and the one his 34-year-old body has on his boxing career.

The tax the Internal Revenue Service says that the Grand Rapids native owes this time, $3.4 million, which was due at this time last year, is a relative pittance compared to when he settled up a $6.17 million lien from the 2007 tax year out of the windfall he made for fighting Marquez in 2009, which was the only time he fought that year.

Mayweather's tax issues at that time were attributed to the trickling effects of pay-per-view income, which can be a legitimate reason, particularly given the massive amount of money he made for his two fights in 2007, one of which was the richest in boxing history.

There also was some dispute about whether the amount demanded was, in fact, owed, and while Mayweather didn't pay his 2007 taxes on time, it's also notable that his final settlement was in the $5 million range, not the $6.17 million cited in the lien.

Still, for someone who has plied his primary trade just twice in more than three years, and who lives a lifestyle of Mayweather's extravagance, the implication of a lien is that the taxes are unpaid because the taxpayer is unable, whether true or not.

Just a guess, but if Mayweather needed to lay his hands on $3.4 million right now, I suspect he could do it in a phone call.

Regardless, other athletes have excelled in the pay-per-view realm without persistent tax liens, and the fact that Mayweather settled up last time by fighting, rather than by writing a check, gives the appearance that his financial liquidity might have depended upon it.

    Hey, everyone needs to work.

Just not everyone who has earned nine figures.

Mayweather grossed $9.4 million in base purse for the Marquez fight in September 2009 (after a $600,000 deduction for missing the contractual weight, which was awarded to Marquez), but there wasn't much left after more than half was deducted for 2007 taxes, plus taxes owed on the entire base purse.

He also would have earned some pay-per-view percentages in 2009 from his two fights in 2007, against Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton, the latter of which was in December, which means Mayweather wouldn't have started seeing pay-per-view checks for that one until about the second quarter of 2008.

In truth, Mayweather probably made more from the Hatton fight in 2008 than when it actually happened in 2007, and perhaps the same with the Marquez fight in 2010 earnings, although Mayweather still has 11 days before that latter tax bill comes due -- and maybe another year-and-a-half before he pays it, the way these things go.

Both these giant tax bills have come when Mayweather fought a major pay-per-view event late in a calendar year. Without question, that will be cited, once again, as the reason he owes another big tab.

So he'll settle his tax bill eventually, even if he isn't fond of taxes. Some of his camp members, after the last tax fiasco, took to wearing t-shirts during training camp with anti-tax jargon.

After at least a half-dozen liens for various back-tax issues over the last decade, Mayweather owes only the $3.4 million from 2009, although that figure very well could change next week, when taxes come due on a big earnings year: He fought Shane Mosley in May 2010, and therefore would have had earned most of his money from that fight during that calendar year, plus virtually all his pay-per-view take from the Marquez fight.

Mayweather's 2010 tax bill will be a doozy compared to the one he still owes from 2009.

He might just have to punch his way out of it.

Or maybe he'll just go back to the WWE...was it ever reported how much he actually got from all those wrestling appearances?

Yep, looks like it's going to be an interesting year for Floyd.

    http://www.ottawasun.com/sports/othersports/2011/04/04/17866561-wenn-story.html

Embattled boxer Floyd Mayweather, Jr. is allegedly facing a massive $3.4 million tax bill, according to a U.S. report.
Mayweather Jr. is said to owe income taxes from 2009 - the same year he came out of retirement to fight Juan Manuel Marquez in a reported $25 million deal.
Officials at America's Internal Revenue Service (IRS) filed a lien against Mayweather Jr. in Clark County, Nevada on 21 January, according to The Detroit News.
The lien was filed just weeks after the star was arrested on suspicion of beating his ex-girlfriend and stealing her cell phone during an argument in front of their three children.
Mayweather Jr. is facing a number of charges stemming from the alleged incident back in September, including felony coercion, grand larceny and robbery, as well as misdemeanour domestic battery and harassment.
He also faces a criminal battery charge stemming from an alleged altercation with a security guard outside his Las Vegas home in November.
He is due back in court in Las Vegas on 25 April.

The security guard stuff is petty...that's going no where...the real deal is the girlfriend stuff.

    "However"

Roger got off with a slap on the wrist and from what I recall the cops saw the woman just after or at the tail end of him choking her.

Hopefully none of the major networks will approve any opponent other than Pac. Then Sleezeweather will be forced to to promote some lame independant PPV.

We all know Floyd will fight. He won't go near Pacquiao, Martinez, Cotto, or anyone that would actually pose a threat or anything.

But yeah he'll fight once this year against someone.

Almost seems like we should start a pool on who it'll be.

If it didn't look like Juan Diaz was going to be fighting Rios next, he'd be a name I'd look at.

Really, though, if it's promoted by Golden Boy, I'm leaning Malignaggi.

If Morales somehow managed to get past Maidana that would be a lock.

Likewise if Ortiz manages to beat Berto.

That's got some background to it. Matthew out for family honor.

Does he have a Mayweather in his corner? They might want to put one there before the fight.

Nah, it's going to be a 140 pounder who Floyd will ask to meet him at welter weight so my money's on Bradley. Whoever it is they won't be promoted by Arum since Floyd refuses to ever do buisness with Arum again.

I bet if Arum offered up Chavez Jr. for Mayweather to feast on, he will jump on it......Pac, Cotto, Marg, etc...a bit too risky for Floyd...

^^^^Actually Margarito may just be a possibility.

Seeing that he'd have to absolutely KILL himself to make 147 these days, along with the fact that the Cotto fight is not locked in yet, AND he's taken about 2 or 3 beatings in his career, not to mention Pacquaio beat him..............

    PERFECT for Floyd.

Bradley? You're giving Floyd too much credit.

Bradley would give Floyd a fight, no way he fights Bradley.

After Khan beats him...floyd would definitely fight him.

    "However"

Bradley is locked in for a summer date with Khan (provided Khan wins in a couple weeks)....so Bradley is off the table.

More myths that Mayweather groupies use to attack PAC...the only fighter Pac has fought coming off a lose since the Marquez rematch was CLOTTEY..who was coming of the lose to Cotto..

I did say since the Marquez rematch....after what Pac did to MAB...Morales was the obvious and best FIGHT he could have taken at that TIME....

If Mayweather wasn't running around scared Pac vs. Mayweather would have happen a year or two ago....
