The irony is that The Ring began its policy in response to paper champions and hoping to reestablish lineage for those who no longer followed it - yet Roy was grandfathered in as a champ solely because he was (by their definition) an undisputed champ.

Vic Darchinyan also held those same three belts at junior bantamweight, yet was rarely if ever credited as undisputed champ.

 

Anyway, it's not incorrect to state that Jones was the popular champ while Michalczewski was the lineal champ before losing to Erdei...

Sadly it was whoolio gonzalez he lost to, an ignominous end. Jones was definitely the universally agreed lhw champ, although there was room for dispute.

 

Of course he was by the American boxing establishment, but we all know if the roles were reversed nobody would have recognized a European as the real champion with the shaky light-heavyweight credentials of Roy. Let´s be honest outside of Roy, Dariusz, Hill, Griffin, Rocky and later Harding and Tarver the whole division was poop.

Anyway Erdei didn´t beat Dariusz, the shameful honour doesn´t even belong to Gonzalez. That was solely on Kohl/Universum. Dariusz had a exponential contract with a guaranteed purse raise for every consecutive title defense. At that point he was at 24 or 25 title defenses and Kohl was so sick of it, that he was more than happy to see Dariusz lose the reasonable close fight.

Anyway now back to Erdei.

Dog Jones - those who still track lineage stopped recognizing Erdei's reign once he moved up to cruiserweight and decided to take a year off after that. A questionable call, but a loophole to remove such distinction considering his lineal title reign was one of the worst in recent history.
