Amir Khan today accepted a £1million pay cut to ensure that his world light-welterweight title defence against Ireland’s unbeaten Paul McCloskey goes ahead in Manchester next Saturday night.

Fears that the fight might be cancelled after Sky pulled the plug on the pay-TV broadcast were allayed as Khan’s father, Shah, said: ‘The fight is definitely on. Amir is taking the maximum purse reduction so that McCloskey still gets decent money.

‘Both the fighters have agreed to go ahead.’

The proposed shift from Sky Box Office to a normal Sky Sports Channel is reducing Khan’s take from £1.25 million to £250,000.

That has helped guarantee the unbeaten McCloskey the biggest pay-night of his career, around £100,000, even though his purse has been trimmed.

Shah Khan added: ‘In real terms Amir is paying McCloskey out of his own pocket but he’s okay with that because he has always wanted to come back from the US for this fight in front of his home fans.’

Despite Sky’s concerns that the fight might not generate a pay-per-view audience, all but 2,000 of the 16,000 seats at the MEN Arena have been sold already.

Lingering doubts as to whether Sky can now juggle the event into their regular programming will surely clinch a sell-out crowd.

Well,.. anybody who leaves Ariza for 'circumstances which I can't really talk about' ... has got to be half alright,..

I've never quite understood the widespread hate for Khan, would you say it's a Lebs vs Rednecks kinda thing?.. in that I mean,.. is it due to some domestic squabbles, 'Londonistan' sort of stuff ..or what?

I thought more was said than that, and that it was basically about Ariza not getting on with Khan's dad or something.

How can he leave Ariza but still be with Roach? Aren't those two basically a tag team?

Hope it's going to be on a normal sky sports channel, that would be great. Maybe the BBC will this fight also!?

Well, IF, and I emphasize the word "IF" too as I am not someone who pays much attention to rumours, then yes, that is quite a coincidence.

If that twitter post is legit, and Khan really said that, then who exactly was this "dopping" official?

Obviously nothing to do with the fight, and unless Khan had signed an agreement with Maidana, or whoever else, surely he would tell this random doping agency to fuck off? He's obviously under no obligation to submit a random urine test for no reason.

So who was this guy, and why did he turn up at Khan's house? Plus, if it really happened, why wasn't it publicized? If it wasn't publicized and had no consequences, it makes the whole thing pointless.

It all seems a bit weird, I'd need to know more details.

    Same for me.

Here is how I see it- cynical or otherwise....

Khan knew Maidana was a test.
He took something to give him an edge.
He doesn't want to do it all the time- or doesn't feel the need to do it all the time.
He won't do it for McCloskey
As an "independent contractor", Ariza is cut out, which means of course he doesn't have to be paid.
Whether Khan is doing it to save cash or otherwise is not clear.
Khan's fathers involvement suggests $ is a predominant concern.

Kevin Mitchell, who has been so fast to update his blog at The Guardian Newspaper everytime a Klitschko fights, has had nothing to say now that Morales has gone 12 with the same Maidana that had Khan hanging on for dear life

He is also silent on the small matter of young Master Haye's infidelity, perhaps that one will be saved for later, like an acorn down a hole.

I agree that there are too many holes in this, there is little extra information that I can find.

But if we invent this scenario did come to life, and the commission sanctioned this doping test (fuck knows why) ... there's no way they would publically bust or anger Khan in any way,.. ....because they know what that'll lead to,.. it'll pierce the various interests within thier fortress... the first pointing finger would be like a dynamite down the hole,..-----all of a sudden boxing's ecosystem would be raining rats.

Regardless of whether Khan was roiding or not, and why he fired Ariza, what I want to know is if there was any truth to that test.

If yes, then why exactly? Who would have arranged it? And what would be the point of it if the result is seemingly meaningless?

We need more information, but even the 'approved to release' information comes down to this sentence,..
    "There were just things" ...
both Ariza and Khan seem to agree on that,.. "it was just things" ..

Sort of like Miguel Diaz screaming "Your a fraud and a cheat" in the ring,.. but then backtracking,.. "Oh I dont know why I said that" ... code of the streets Mex, code of the streets.

    That bit was very noticeable.

From both sides, the reason for the split was noticeably VERY vague, especially when Khan was talking. Ariza was saying the Khan's are money grabbing scumbags, thieves etc, and stole a contract from his bag.

When asked about it Khan was like "Err, yeah, so in training camp, there were some things Ariza was doing, I'm not sure, they were these things you know, so I talked to Freddy, and he was like yeah, I have other strength and conditioning coaches"

    Doesn't NECESSARILY mean anything though.

Khan - McCloskey, wasn't generating the interest on sky so Khan has decided to go PPV with a different broadcaster rather than offer it for free on sky or terrestrial. Dumb move by Khan to have a fight in Manchester the same day Man United play Man City in an FA Cup semi final

Yeah, ironically, even the illegal stream page I'm looking up right now has 'Man U - Man city' ... in place of where the fight would likely have been,... :goingmad:

It's a really dumb move on Khans part, no doubt. It makes much more sense to cut his losses and have the fight shown on Sky Sports 1/2/3/4 or a terrestrial channel than via primetime. It would allow him to build on his fan base with more accessible exposure and he can recoup the cash in the unification with Bradley. Silly stuff.
