Watched this movie a little while ago. A story about a college-aged kid who has a relationship with Marisa Tomei :hump::hump:

She has a violent ex-husband, so the relationship will result in tragedy. The movie is more of a family drama.

The movie is kind of slow, which was what I didn't like about it. On the other hand, it's well-acted and did keep me interested.

I thought it was pretty good, but it didn't live up to my expectations, given its rave reviews from the critics.

I saw this at the movies when it first came out. My thoughts on it are about the same as yours.

I thought it was painfully dull, TBH. I couldn't believe how well-received this movie was with the critics.

If I'm not mistaken, this was the year that Halle Berry won Best Actress. Even though I thought her performance was kind of weak to win such an award (and I've always questioned her deserving it that year), the rest of the field was shitty enough to where there's not much of an argument.

More germane to this point, Sissy Spacek most certainly wasn't deserving of it. I thought her performance was very overrated.

But as suggested in the OP, anything featuring Marisa Tomei is always worth a glance

I loved this movie. Yeah its slow, but what do you expect from this director. Has anyone seen Little Children? same director. Great fucking movie.

Didn't know it was the same director. I liked Little Children. This one, not so much. It wasn't bad, it just didn't do anything for me, for some reason.

I think its hard for anyone to imagine if their child was murdered and to even blame yourself for it. I put myself in their position of picturing my child murdered. I think that is why i admired the movie so much.

I think Atom Egoyan covered the same subject much better in "Exotica" and "The Sweet Hereafter" and to a lesser extent "Felicia's Journey".

Also slow paced films, but I think much more effective.

I remember when we saw this movie in the theater we thought it was very, very bad. It nearly bored us out of the theater before it was over.

Could not believe it then went on to be nominated for Best Picture.
