GF---With all due respect, there isn't a chance in hell that GSP beats Daley in a stand-up battle. It just isn't happening.

I forgot BJ was at 170. He is the lone guy at 170 that MIGHT beat Daley in a kickboxing match.

And man, I hope you didn't mean Scott Smith and Benji Radach... Your argument goes down the drain if that's who you meant. I think Radach knows how to box, but he is not a more effective MMA striker than Daley. Not even in the ballpark.

I'll go a step further, if their weight's were equal, Daley matches up fairly well with almost everyone on your list in the stand-up department. Obviously Silva would be the exception.

Seriously though, it doesn't make sense to even debate this list as long as you stand by the notion that Scott Smith is a better striker than Paul Daley considering the fact that they HAD a stand-up fight in which Smith ended up face-down and asleep. To me, the more effective guy is the one still standing.

 

Are you kidding? Smith got his ass kicked by Cung Le and only pulled out the win because Le was completely gassed. Effective striking had nothing to do with it.

And how can you give Smith's striking credit for beating Le yet ignore the fact that Daley destroyed Scott Smith with punches in less than a round? Seriously that was a highlight reel knockout.

Sorry GF, but this makes absolutely no sense. Smith has been stopped from strikes numerous times, where Daley never was until Diaz.

 

Is this the same GSP that was outboxed by BJ Penn and Matt Serra in their first fights and then game planned to avoid boxing with them in the rematches? Is this the same GSP that didn't want to spend even 30 seconds standing with Dan Hardy?

Please GSP's boxing is functional and has improved, but he will never be as effective a striker as a guy like Daley with his Muay Thai background and natural power. Daley is fluid where GSP is still very mechanical.

If you put GSP and Daley in a boxing ring with kickboxing rules, Daley ends his night in the first round.

And by the way, you said that anyone with boxing ability beats Daley. Daley's beaten more than 5 guys with Pro Boxing or Pro Kickboxing experience. The dude can strike. Make no mistake about it.

Saying Smith is a better standup fighter than Daley is akin to saying Ricky Hatton is a better boxer than Pacquiao. Makes no fucking sense at all, just borderline insane.

Smith lunged forward with a wild punch, Daley landed a perfectly timed, crisp counter left hook and Smith was out cold. The same thing would happen 9/10. Smith isn't a very good striker at all, he is just really gutsy with decent power.

Daley has significantly more power and technique than Smith.

As Trpl said, Smith has been beaten standing a few times, including by Cung Le BOTH times (he was getting schooled in the first fight too).

Daley actually has better technique than most of the guys you listed, but even if you don't rate his technique, his power alone makes him an elite striker and would enable him to win a standup fight against almost every one of the listed fighters.

George Foreman wasn't exactly pretty to look at it, but the guy was an elite boxer largely down to extreme power, even if his technique looked borderline amateurish at times, especially compared to a fast, fluid athletic freak like Tyson.

The only people that would stand a chance against Daley in a standup fight other than Diaz are BJ (who has good albeit basic boxing), and maybe GSP. What Trpl says is true, he is very mechanical still, but he has improved a LOT in boxing, and he is just a very clever, very patient and disciplined fighter.

 

You are not deemed as one of the hardest punchers in MMA by knocking out B/C level opponents. Sorry man.

Scott Smith has never stopped anyone on the same MMA level as Martin Kampmann.

For that matter, I'm not sure he's beaten anyone as good as Duane Ludwig.

All I remember is Scott Smith getting bounced from the UFC because he looked like living shit against Terrell, Cote and Ed Herman. Hell, he looked like crap against Pete Sell as well but managed to land the hail mary punch.

Seriously GF, Smith went tooth and nail with freaking Pete Sell. If Sell were matched against Daley, he might have ended up dead.

 

Smith is a guy that's hard not to like. Balls to the wall, 100% guts type of fighter.

But let's face it, he has very little skill or talent, and has overachieved purely on the grounds of his heart and decent punch.

 

It's awful hard for me to say anything bad about him because he has truly given us 3 of the best comeback wins in MMA history.

I can watch his first fight with Cung Le 50 times, and I still expect Le to win. That's how badly he was getting beaten.

 

Absolutely, that was pretty stunning, and amazing proof of how far heart can go in the fight game. Most fighters would have quit mentally by that point, and just not had it in them to land that punch.

The 3 you're thinking of are Sell, Radach and Cungle right?
