Why are these NFL'ers choosing boxing?

Ray Edwards, DE for the Minnesota Vikings is the latest cat to throw his hat in the ring. Edwards will be making his pro debut in May, http://content.usatoday.com/communi...rds-signs-on-for-two-fight-pro-boxing-stint/1

Manny Stewart even went on to say this guy has ability.

Everyone knows about Tom Zbikowski of the Ravens; at least he had an amateur background.

Brandon Jacobs of the Giants was 30-2 as an amateur but, so far, has chosen to be a manager instead of an active fighter; ironically, the basis of his decision not to fight is his concern about concussions in boxing!:scratcher:......

While this NFL lockout is in full swing, these football players, with their ready made fan bases and fan curiosity are turning to boxing because they know they'll get a solid payday because of their name and for being a pro football player.

Why aren't these guys going MMA? At least in MMA they'll have a chance to grab and hold and do what they do a lot of as football players. Now, I know there is more to MMA than grabbing and holding, but that seems to be more in a football players wheelhouse.

How many more of these guys will follow this new trend that seems to have just popped up?

"Minnesota Vikings DE Ray Edwards became the latest footballer to sign up for a pro boxing gig on Tuesday. Edwards, 26. agreed to a two-fight stint"

    Answers a lot.

Not really. These guys are just doing it while the lockout is ongoing. I'm sure if they knew the lockout was going to be for a whole year, they'd fight more.

My question is essentially, why boxing? Whether it's long term or not is immaterial.

They're not changing careers, as you already pointed out. It's a side job.

Why boxing vs something else like ... um for example MMA. (just to bring up a possible alternative)

    You already know why.

There's considerably more money involved with boxing.

And it takes a certain lack of dignity to fight another man inside of a cage.

I could see where an uneducated person would say or think that, but I'm surprised to see you saying it. It takes courage, not a lack of dignity. That's like saying it takes a lack of dignity for a man to enter a ring and get his face slugged.

Because American promoters and HBO always sell the idea that the next Foreman and the next Ali and the next Marciano are playing football. So now they are boxing. This will fail just like Ocho Cinco´s attempt at minor league professional football in the MLS.

Why boxing and not mma? Fear and common sense.

In boxing, you can get your ass kicked if you lose.

In mma, you can get shit broken, dislocated, rearranged, and smashed by objects much harder than a boxing glove.

MMA is easy right? They are all bums according to most of you, why wouldn't they take the easy Money? I mean Hershel Walker is making decent pay days as an MMA novice and side show.

I would not necessarily say fear. The easy payday sounds more likely. C'mon, do you really think if these guys did get into MMA, they'd get the best of the worst guy? Hell no, they'd get the worst of the worst and that "WORST GUY", will probably be told behind closed doors to take it easy and catch the "L".

I think it is virtually the same in boxing. This guy is probably going to take on some clown like Mark Gastineau once did; the guy received a love tap from Mark and flew over the top rope as if he were a superhero!

Yeah real MMA'er can break bones and maim, especially against a guy without a clue; conversely, a boxer can break jaws and ribs against a guy without experience.

god damn, you guys with the "Americans are daydreaming" bullshit are fucking retarded

    for the MILLIONTH GODDAMN TIME...

It's not that lots of kids who might have boxed in the past are now PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES IN MAJOR LEAGUE TEAM SPORTS... it's that THEY ARE NOT BOXING, they may be PLAYING BASKETBALL OR FOOTBALL INSTEAD... THAT DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE ALL IN THE NFL OR THE NBA

    They ARE NOT BOXING

It's too bad all of you are too fucking stupid to understand this concept

Or they're offering sub prime mortgages.

  23. mikE

    It's fear and common sense.

You are unlikely to suffer an injury from boxing that keeps you from playing football. That's not the case with mma.

Boxers don't break ribs and when they do it has nothing to do with inexperience on the part of the losing fighter. The fact that we can all name about 4 fights where ribs were broken proves the point.

Hey, Hey now!!!! I was in that game before and made some serious money! I swear I did not have any experience and was making more money than I ever made anywhere else. I didn't think anyone could make that kind of money legally..... As we see now, a lot of it wasn't LEGAL!:Lok:
