I think Quartey could be competitive with just about any welter in history but Hearns is a pretty bad style matchup for him. Ike doesn't have any advantages over Tommy including his best weapon.

Is there ANYONE Hearns isn't a 'bad style match up' for at welter?

True enough, could be said for most guys against a welter Hearns.

I just don't see what Quartey could do. As good as his jab/right was Hearns' was quicker, and longer. His right hand was obviously harder as well. Even if you call into question some of the weaknesses Hearns had such as chin perhaps stamina, Quartey wasn't much better if at all in either regard. He wouldn't try to get inside and work over Hearns to the body.

Ike can't outbox Hearns (although i think the jab exchanges early would be fascinating) and he doesn't go into attack mode when behind. Quartey does well enough early but he doesn't have anything to win.

Not especially, in my opinion. De La Hoya hurt him pretty badly at least at one stage in their encounter. Hearns takes him out sometime invariably, quite possibly inside five or six.

  9. Good point.

There's isn't anyone. Hearns' is simply a Welterweight Nemesis. Height/reach/speed/power combination is intense!

The Cuevas fight came on ESPN the other night. The 'Motor City cobra' nickname was so apt. His punches came out like snake lunges. Like a whip. Freaky, physical specimen.

The same way Usain Bolt is born to sprint; every tendon and joint and muscle, perfectly aligned for it, Tommy Hearns was born to punch.

Wide decision win for Hearns I think. 11-4, maybe. Allot of posing.

I think Ike gets smoked. It's just a bad matchup for him period. Like others have said Ike's boxing IQ would fail him in this fight and I just think he'd walk into something that kayos him.
