I thought it was interesting in terms of perspective at the peak of his dominance, rather than looking back like most of the shit out there about Tyson (or anyone)

Also, I totally forgot that if the Bonecrusher Smith fight was a minute longer, Mike woulda got knocked the fuck out!

There were posters that came on the boards armed with nothing but a copy of this and wondered why no one else thought Tyson was the best ever.

Old Tyson clips look less impressive to me every time I watch them for some reason.

One thing i loved about Tyson is that once the bell rang to start the fight you knew Tyson was bringing the heat immediately. It was like opening up a caged door housing a hungry lion. No feeling out process at all. I don't believe in the "Tyson beat everybody because they were scared" nonsense, but even for confident fighters it must been a bit nerve rattling knowing what was coming.

A lot of fighters look for the knockout from the opening bell, but few (if any) did it with the same vigor and all out attack Tyson did.

    Precisely.

That was why he has created such loyal fans: he brought the heat immediately. He was in the ring to knock you out as soon as possible and then go home. Simple as that. None of this posing prancing decision victory bullshit.

He was also a much better fighter than his detractors give him credit for. Very few fighters, any weight class, had the combination of ambidextrous power, handspeed/combination punching, upperbody movement, chin that Tyson brought to the table.

People seem to think the post-prison version was a good representation of the true Tyson.

And then there's young punks that only knew the Post-Prison version and wondered why some thought he was one of the best ever.

    True.

I would assume you're not referring to me in that statement. I may be many things but young is not one of them.

I think this is so true

For people that watched him come up... It is hard to even argue with people that only saw him in his decline

These guys don't realize that Tyson was a KID and he was DESTROYING people

I agree that Tyson was great. Although I have a handful of guys who I believe would have beaten him in the all time ranks, so many people forget about the phenomena that was Mike Tyson during the time he was heading up the ladder and a little bit thereafter.

Since I was too young to enjoy Ali fully (I was born in '72) and wasn't around at all for Joe Louis, Tyson is my generation's Louis/Ali...... The way my grandfather talked about listening to Louis fights on the radio, or some of the older cats that I know talking about how they went to the theater to watch the Ali/Frazier closed circuit EVENT on closed circuit, All Tyson EVENTS were it's equivalent for me.

The dude was a phenom. When he first came on the scene, before he even won a title, people thought he was a hollywood creation and not a real person. The speed/power combination was ridiculous. he was a machine. Barry Tompkins said it best:

"Tyson's punches even sound different to other fighters!"

Dude was a killer. The Prison stint eroded away his skills and people seem to only remember the post-prison version.

The problem is, in the eyes of many he eventually became that Hollywood creation. Prime Tyson was great, but not as great as his highlight reels

I agree that people who weren't watching Tyson coming up just can't understand. That was a time when every kid on the playground knew who the baddest man on the planet was.

    Remember this?

Nah...Tyson was a beast! Before he came along, "mans" like Tubbs, Berbick, Spinks, Holmes and Bruno were giving all of the other top Heavies HELL...shit even after that Tubbs gave undefeated Bowe Hell, Holmes beat Undefeated Mercer and Bruno was leading Undefeated Lewis until the KO.....yet Tyson ran through those guys like a hot knife through butter! He cleaned up shit!

    No holllywood creation at all.
