Your favourite and least favourite British boxer of the 90's and why??

Who was the one British boxer during the 90's you loved to watch and admired and who was the one British boxer in the 90's you loved to watch but did not like??

 

Benn. Nigel is THE reason why I became a boxing fan. Remember all those primetime fights on ITV on a Saturday night? Tremendous stuff.

I hated Bruno more than most. The whole '...know what I mean 'Arry' and all that guff made me want to punch holes in the TV and the fact that he was fucking shite didn't help either. Now that he doesn't fight any more, I've grown a little more mellow towards the chap, but i still wouldn't cross the road for an autograph if I saw him.

Loved to watch Hamed. Hoped he lost, all the time. Same with Eubends.

Loved to watch McCullough and hoped he won.

I have to make the cliche vote (or at least the frontrunner vote) and say that Lennox was my favourite british fighter. he really is possibly the best of the whole lot, and he did it right in front of all the american's faces in spite of them. beat everyone he fought, and he is older than me so i genuinely looked up to the guy. even if i really like a fighter these days it's hard duplicate that. i don;t look up to cotto (not british but one of my current faves) or froch or khan or degale.

least favourite probably akinwande, hierbie hide, bruno.... any of the heavies that weren't lennox haha.

always liked both benn and eubank despite their own rivalry

 

I've watched a few Benn fights now, but never live (on tv), never had the opportunity in my household to watch boxing when I was younger. When Benn fought Eubank in 1990, I was only 6, but have seen the fights between them on youtube. They were excellent, especially the first.
The 'Best of Enemies' show with Jonathan Ross in '93, that was a great show, portraying each boxers personalities a little. I liked both boxers. They definitely had a spark about them.

 

I didn't like Handfed or Lemmon.

Whenever I need a "feel good moment" I'll pop in Lemmon vs Rahman I supplemented by Handfed vs Barrera.

This past weekend I needed a "feel good moment" so I watched Leonard vs Norris, Leonard vs Camacho chased by De La Hoya vs Pacquiao.

Back on topic...

Had to be Hamed...Lemmon closely on his heels.

i didn't care either way about Steve Collins (yes I know he's Irish), Chris Eubanks or Nigel Benn...I classified them as "guys who don't want none of Roy Jones."

Part of the reason I couldn't stand Hatton was due to his fans (not on here, the ones who went to his fights), first of all they were Mancunian. Secondly, though the football crossover made for genuinely great and exciting atmospheres, they really didn't have a fucking clue about boxing.

 

I would have loved to have seen Collins vs Eubank, in '95, in Millstreet, Cork (where my family are from).

Did anyone go to that fight??? The atmosphere seemed electric as fuck.

 

Collins tried to get a fight with Roy Jones. He would have lost- lost big- but he did try to get the fight.

 

Were you not a Collins fan?

 

Eubank and Benn were quality, Benn especially. Great fights, great wins, great times. However I think the latter batch of British Super-Middleweights are/were superior

 

Benn vs Froch would have been some fight.

 

Yeah, when he'd CEASED to B Relevant AND when Roy was a Lightheavy...But when it MATTERED, Back in the Mid 90's, when Roy was @ 168, Collins Wanted NONE....

Even tho it doesn't make real sense - i always found it rather eery and unbelievable to watch Eubank fight after the Watson rematch... almost as if there was some strange nobility in the fact that he was too reluctant to finish his opponent off even tho he was a few punches away from doing it. Steve Collins 1 and Carl Thompson 1 are the most obvious examples... i thought there were a couple more fights in there too where you could tell he was holding back.

 

And this is new??

Collins was making massive money in Ireland and the UK with title fights vs Eubank, Benn, and some assorted bums.

Once that had passed, he retired- wanting NONE of Calzaghe either- and then when he needed a payday he got into the Roy Jones swing of things.

Collins was going to take a beating- at 168 or at 175, he simply made far too much money at 168 in the mid 1990's in Ireland/UK.

He tried to finish Collins off IMMEDIATELY in the first fight and missed with a massive right hand...then he went on TV and did this:

His life has fallen apart. Its actually quite sad now. He gave his kids away to some woman, he converted to Islam, kicked a taxi, got a divorce....I don't know what order it all happened in and I doubt Chris does either.athetic:

I liked McCullough because of the style, the chin, the activity rate, and the guy fought only the best. His resume is stacked with big names.

I disliked Hamed because I just disliked the cunt and his behaviour since has borne out my dislike.

 

That'y my take on it too. Eubank backed off and didn't attack Collins as much as he could have done. i am not sure he could have KO'd him anyway, and I definitely think "killing" him was a bit oveblown... no doubt Collins proved to be the better man in multiple fights, I don't think anything contrary. But I do think Eubank b acked off, and i think he did so against Thompson and maybe a couple other fighters since the Watson match.

 

But Eubank IMMEDIATELY leaped in with a big right as soon as the referee re-started the fight :dunno:
