Sergio Martinez and Kelly Pavlik or Juan Manuel Marquez and Kostya Tszyu Obscure, I know. But in the MM section, Mexican Wedding Shirt says it's Sergio and Pavlik. That seems so beyond insane to me. Just want the opinions of the troops.
Marquez does have a wide back and big shoulders, so he gives off the impression of being a bigger man. He has a bigger frame than most former 126lbrs but at 140 he simply does not have the presence his frame suggests. Its a confusing one as JMM does appear to not have any real size disadvantage, and Tsyzu was probably 5'6" at best.
Martinez is a fairly dominant champion at the weight where he beat Pavlik though, you know? And isn't Marquez too small for 140?
He, like Hatton, can carry a tonne of weight and not an ounce of fat, but so far as fighting goes, he desperately under-performs once he reaches a certain weight. He is a beast at 130-135, throw on extra 5lbs and he tails-off badly. Pavliks main thing is his height. In terms of his shoulders, back, thighs etc he's not that big. He too also suffers at 160+ and has turned in average-poor performances at 166.
Remember when Pavlik and Taylor weighed in for the first fight, Taylor looked bigger, more sculpted. They both punched with equal authority that night but Taylor seemed to have less resistance. At 166, it went the distance, and I don't think Pavlik showed any real power until late in the fight, possibly the 11th when he found a big, low-slung shot to the guts. No matter what way you slice it, Pavlik either didn't have the same power at 166, or Taylor was responding better to it at 166. This would suggest Taylor was getting more out of the extra weight, which suggests he was the "bigger guy".
Sorry but you're all completely wrong. What's insane is thinking there is less difference between Pavilk and Martinez than Marquez and Tszyu. Have you even seen the fight?? Pavlik was much bigger. Martinez was much better. You realise in most of Tszyu's fights he's listed as 5'6 and in most of Marquez's fights he's listed as 5'7 right? But of course height doesn't tell the whole story. Maybe Marquez has a Morales esque physique and Tszyu is like a 140 pound tank. Well no, that couldn't be further from the truth. Look at these weigh in pics, when Marquez was at featherweight too. There is simply NO WAY you can tell me there is more of a size difference here than Pavlik and Martinez, it's insane. I guarantee you if a prime Marquez took a few months to pack on some solid muscle him and Tszyu would look more or less the same size in the ring. Tszyu fights 14 pounds heavier, and IS a bigger man, but I honestly think a large part of that is Marquez was good at cutting weight and Tszyu wasn't. You look at the two, they have the same size arms and legs, same height basically, the main difference is Tszyu has a barrel chest. Marquez looks like a 130 pounder, always has done, and Tszyu looks like a lightweight. They basically look a division apart.
Its ironic- Tszyu is so thick through the belly that he looks less defined and therefore "smaller"...and his thighs are so much fuller. Look at Tszyus upper body. Its square. There is no taper. He's just a block.
Why the laughing smiley? Everything I said there makes sense. You have 2 guys that are 5'6/5'7 with very similar dimensions, one has a barrel chest and one doesn't. Then you have a guy like Martinez who is 5 inches shorter than Pavlik and looked several weight divisions smaller in the ring. There is clearly less of a size difference between Marquez and Tszyu, and an equal gulf in ability.
Why? Are you disputing they are the same height and a very similar build? Like I said, Marquez is a big featherweight, Tszyu is a small 140 pounder. To look at them both, it looks like a 130 pounder versus a lightweight. Castillo is bigger than Tszyu, so are several other lightweights like Rios, even Katsidis looks at least Tszyu's size.
That's height. Height and size are different things. Dismissing a "barrel chest" as insignificant when discussing size is mad. Its like dismissing penis size when discussing penis size.
First, height is really irrelevant. Unless you want to start comparing Diego Corrales to Mike Tyson. The fact is, JMM is too small to fight at 140. Sergio Martinez is not too small to fight at 160. Where's the disconnect?
No. Katsidis would look fucking tiny compared to Tszyu. I see where you are coming from- I used to make this mistake too. It is very hard to define...
Look tiny? They fight 5 pounds apart. They are the same height, and Katsidis actually looks slightly thicker set. Sure Tszyu is bigger than Marquez, but the size difference isn't huge at all.
Martinez is small for 160. He looks at best the same size as someone like Vargas. He wins because he's much better than the guys he's fighting. The same reason Marquez wins at 135. Height is irrelevant to a point. I'm only mentioning height because, for the 50th time, their build is almost identical. I guarantee you a tale of the tape would look very similar, with the main difference being Tszyu's bigger waist. It's not exactly like Tyson Vs Caballero. The point is, frame wise they are almost the same. The main difference being Tszyu carries some extra weight around the mid section and is not great at cutting weight. Pavilk is a huge middleweight, Tszyu is a small 140 pounder. Tszyu looked smaller than most of the guys he faced at 140. Him and Chavez looked the same size. Cool Vince and Hatton both looked bigger.
Tszyu is definitely not a big man, though. I'm 5'8" & I stood behind him recently. He was visibly shorter, but powerfully-built (of course, with retirement & age, he has put on some weight), but I still don't think I agree with Mex's assertion here.
Martinez & Pavlik... JM Marquez is Probably AS TALL as Kostya Tszyu, Perhaps even a Tad TALLER...Tszyu's THICKER Built, but that's It...w/Martinez & Pavlik, Kelly's Taller AND THICKER... REED:hammert:
it's hard to say. some fighters can carry their strength going up in weight, some can't. in JMM's case, i didn't think he'd be a formidable lightweight, but he seems to be fine at it. who know's what he'd be like at 140. same could be said for fighters being shot/ruined after a fight. some guys can take a terrible beating and come back i.e gatti, morales in many of their fights and some can't recover i.e. jeff lacy after the calzaghe beatdown.
