The bad guy makes the movie. Face it, would you give a shit about the Star Wars movies if the main bad guy was Pee Wee Herman? FUCK NO!!!!!! Bad guys make the good guys look good or even great.

Who are your faves or the greats? They are not necessarily one and the same.

Tonight I started clicking through some old films, and I remembered one of my favorite bad guys of ALL TIME!!!!

Mitch Leary: In The Line of Fire. That movie would have been totally forgettable without him. As it is, Malkovich gave a chilling performance, and he was fucking ROBBED when Tommy Lee Jones got it for The Fugitive.

Deniro - Anything he wants to be bad in
Gene Hackman - Quick and the dead

Hugo Weaving. Agent Smith. Another one of my favorites. Keanu Reeves was pretty boring, but Agent Smith made him into a hero.

    Even now:

    "MR. ANDERSON!!!"

Agreed. Jones was good but Oscar-worthy for The Fugitive? Fiennes in Schindler's List, Malkovich in this, and Penn in Carlito's Way were all better IMO.

Bad guys in films often tend to be more charismatic and interesting, the filmmakers sometimes have to make sure they don't outshine the good guy and make the viewer root for them (unless they design it that way).

Some of my favorite villains/evil characters in movies:

Julius Carry in The Last Dragon
Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs
    Peter Stormare in Fargo
    Mr. T in Rocky 3
    Alan Rickman in Die Hard
    Kevin Spacey in Se7en
Javier Bardem in No Country for Old Men
Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator (talk about perfect casting)
Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight
    Edward Norton in Primal Fear

Gene Hackman is HIGHLY underrated in Quick and The Dead.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned "Commodus" aka Jauquin Phoenix yet. He's gotta be a top 5-10 all time villian. He very much deserved his best supporting actor award.

Alec Baldwin played an awesome vilian in The Juror.

Also, Tim Robbins in Arlington Road deserves mention.

Then you have either "Bill the Butcher" or "Daniel Plainview" you could mention... take your pic.

Best of all time.... its hard to argue against Hopkins as Hannibal Lector. I dont think they'll EVER be as awesome a vilian in movie history as Lector.

  10. Maverick

Phoenix didn't win, Del Toro won for Traffic.

Daniel Day-Lewis for Gangs Of New York was a brilliant performance. Dennis Hopper in Speed was also great.

My bad. For some reason I thought Phoenix had won it. Commodus was a great vilian regardless though.

And yea Dennis Hopper was great in Speed.

Gabriel Byrne played a great Satan in "End of Days".

And another Alec Baldwin mention.... he was an awesome vilian in "The Cooler".

  12. ROBBED?? Are you insane.

Tommy Lee Jones was SUPERB in the Fugitive. Absolutely superb. he carried the film and was one of teh mor emomerable Villains.

    Anyway...

The guy from Inglorious Basterds is up there.

  13. I have to rent this one. Never seen it.

Hackman is excellent in every role he does..

    Lex Luthor
    Unforgiven
    Crimson Tide

  14. Baddest of all baddass villains though is "MESSALA" from Ben Hur.

    Hands down numero uno.

Tommy Lee Jones wasnt a "villian" at all in The Fugitive.

Malkovich on the other hand was a brilliant villian in ITLOF.

Whats your obesssion with Ben Hur?

And Messala better than Hannibal Lector? GTFOH!

  17. Have you seen Ben Hur? Messala is certainly better than Hannibal Lector. He's that good. Bad bad man!!

"I asked for your help, now you've given it to me. By making this example out of you I discourage treason. By sentencing, without hestitation, an old friend, I will be feared!!!"

Ive seen Ben Hur in its entirety about 6 times. Great movie, but Messala is hardly the best all time villian. For the TIME perhaps he was, but not by today's standards.

But anyway..... back to the topic. It'd be a crime not give "Mr. Han" a mention amongst the all time villians.

  19. Word.

HAN was a very very baaaad man! I still get shivers thinking about him. Top 10 all time no doubt.

Yeah its worth seeing. Quick and The Dead is by no means a "great" Western like Unforgiven..... but its a highly entertaining one, and I rewatch it anytime it's on. And it has an ALL STAR cast considering it co-stars Crowe, and Dicarprio.... before they became stars. But yeah.... Hackman was evil as HELL in it.

  21. Jimmy

Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) - The Shining
    Joker (Jack Nicholson) - Batman
Joker (Heath Ledger) - The Dark Knight
Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) - Psycho

I wouldn't say so, but it's just that the portrayal pales considerably to his portrayal of Little Bill Daggett in Unforgiven. He was a first-rate bastard in Unforgiven.

Strangely enough, Clint Eastwood temporarily becomes an even worse bad guy at the end of that movie.

  30. Disagree comnpletely. At the end of the film Clint Eastwood just gets revenge...and warns everyone not to come after him. L'il Bll on the other hand was a heartless evil son of a bitch.
