I've never been able to verify it because the version of the fight I've seen is cut off mid-interview... but when Yaqui Lopez stopped Mike Rossman, he was interviewed post-fight by Don Dunphy and when Dunphy asked him, more or less, "Rossman was a big favorite going into this fight, how were you able to beat him, Yaqui?"; Lopez answered ALLEGEDLY "I hate jews" !!!

Now, I have to admit that it seems unlikely to me, because at the start of the interview he is complimentary of Rossman being a good fighter and a good puncher... it seems odd that he would go THERE after saying nice things... he also went over to Rossman's corner to commiserate with him and pat him on the head after Rossman's corner stopped it and I heard either Rossman or one of his guys say "you're a hell of a fighter, Yaqui"

still, the story has been much repeated over the years... I have no idea if anyone has a tape of the full interview

Never forget how Yaqui was interviewed after the fight and openly said more than once he was happy to beat Rossman because he was "a loud mouth Jew Boy." No joke.

Not sure if that's exactly the quote, hg, (thought he said,"I hate Jews) but I heard it too. Said it TWICE. The interviewer thought he'd misunderstood him the first time. He quickly switched back to the broadcast team at ringside.

Even funnier is the fact that he fucked up the lyrics while doing so.

But yeah, Haugen could talk a good game - and was even a good sport about it afterward when called it.

"I guess they were some pretty good cab drivers."

calling Pazienza a "steroid monkey" was terrific too

not so much a smacktalk thing, but late in his career he was fighting for something called the WBF Welterweight Title and he said "WBF?? what the hell is that, the World ButtFucking championship?":atu:
