OK guys, there is always complaining about P4P MMA rankings compiled in various places. So I thought we should put out a list that is reflective of the Fightbeat posters. You know, people that really know the sport.

Each poster will list their top 10 P4P Picks in this thread. If another poster questions your rankings, please counter with your justification for the choices. Your justifications will be incorporated in the write-up on our final Top 10 list. If someone makes you change your mind, you can edit your list prior to the deadline.

On May 13th I will add up the results to compile a top 10 P4P list. I will give a brief write up for each fighter justifying their ranking. Hopefully the list with write up can be posted on the Homepage to get our rankings out there and generate discussion.

For the sake of helping you decide, I have compiled the rankings of 5 different publications and combined their list below. Feel free to rank someone not on the list. This is just to provide an idea of what an average feel is right now for the top guys.

Wow, Gilbert Melendez at 3.... I'll admit, Gilbert is a guy that I just couldn't rank properly. The dude walked through Aoki. He demolished Kawajira. And both those guys likely belonged in the Top 10 at 155.

Also, if you matched Shields versus Nick Diaz, who wins?

    Shields beats him.

I just cant see putting Melendez above Edgar. Especially 6 spots above him.

why because he beat BJ penn?

  8. Explosivo

    Explosivo Undisputed Champion

    1. Silva
    2. GSP
    3. Bones
    4. Edgar
    5. Melendez
    6. Aldo
    7. Alvarez
    8. Shields
    9. Diaz
    10. BJ Penn-Lyoto Machida (tie)

    No, because he beat:

    Jim Miller
    Tyson Griffin
    Mark Boecek
    Spencer Fisher
    Hermes Franca
    Sean Sherk

    AND BJ Penn twice.

There is absolutely NO comparison between the guys Edgar has beaten and those Melendez has beaten.

Again, I give Melendez a good ranking because of the way he beat Aoki and Kawajiri, but he hasn't faced what Edgar has.

And the good news is, there is a good chance that this debate will be put to rest very soon.

He arguably lost to BJ the first time, lost to Maynard and arguably lost to maynard the second time. He has lost after beating some fo the guys on your list. And to someone that isnt in the top ten.

    What's there to laugh about?

other than franca, who is overrated.

All of those wins came before his loss to maynard and were not in the UFC. They were before The Ultimate Fighter.

The Sherk fight was also after his loss to Maynard. Only the Miller fight was not in the UFC, the rest were in the UFC.

you are correct. I really just meant after TUF. I mispoke.

But its besides the point. The point is that those guys arent anything special.

So what is so much better about Gilbert Melendez's resume?

Who in particular are you talking about?

  21. Anthony

Its not really the resume. He posted it and that is fine. I wasnt even laughing at him posting the resume. I was just laughing at those guys. Its about who can beat who.

And Melendez right now seems unstoppable. Edgar IMO will lose his next fight. I think a prime BJ takes him. And i think Maynard will take him.

    Jim Miller
    Tyson Griffin

    Mark Boecek
    Spencer Fisher
    Hermes Franca

Dude, that is revisionist. Griffin, Sherk, Franca and even Fisher were regarded guys when Edgar fought them. To say otherwise NOW is just incorrect.

And as I said, that list in ANY time period significantly outweighs the wins on Gilbert's resume. Without even an ounce of question.

A laughable list is the resume of Gilbert Melendez which is highlight by a long ago win over Clay Guida.

Who can you see beating Melendez right now?

Yeah and Edgar has beaten a better list of "WHO" by a mile.

LOL at BJ in his prime. BJ just fought to a draw with one of the best Welterweights in the world. BJ isn't past it, Edgar is just that good.

Seriously, I hate it when people start talking about 'prime' when a fighter loses. The BJ Penn that was beaten by Edgar is the same exact guy that destroyed Diego Sanchez 4 months earlier. 4 months!!!!

BJ didn't suddenly slip out of his prime. He just met a guy that counter his skill set and was better.

  26. *Z*

    Maynard for sure. Superior wrestler.

  27. Anthony

    Anthony Admin Staff Member

    Aoki was superior too.

  28. Anthony

    Anthony Admin Staff Member

Diego Sanchez? Give me a break with Sanchez. BJ is already thinking about retiring. Does that sound like prime talk?

Again, its not about resume. Its about who can beat who. Edgar cant beat Melendez. End of story

    Trplsec Sleeps in a Cage

Melendez isn't a lock to beat any of the top LW's in the world

Seriously, Edgar, Maynard, Alvarez, Pettis, Henderson, Miller, etc are all better than the guys Melendez has faced.

And I would probably expect great fights if Melendez faced fringe guys like Lytle, Dunham, or Siver.

But they arent better than melendez
