BJ start talking retirement went he lost 2 straight to Edgar. Coming of the huge win against Sanchez, BJ was even remotely thinking retirement. In fact, just the opposite. He said he want to fight as much as possible. And resume is the thing that gives us a good idea of how fighters stack up against the best in the division. Edgar has faced the best in the division and beat him. Melendez hasn't. End of discussion.
Again, that doesnt mean shit. Who you can beat isnt determined by who you have beaten. I will ask you again, who do you have beating melendez?
Melendez is one of the best in the division. so no, edgar hasnt faced the best. if these two fight, come prediction time, you will pick Melendez. And if you dont, it will just be out of spite. No way you pick Edgar over melendez
I would absolutely pick Edgar over Melendez. Without hesitation. The only guy to beat Edgar is Maynard, who is the best wrestler in the division and one of the best wrestlers in MMA. It's very simple for me. Edgar beat the best boxer in MMA in BJ Penn. And he fought to a draw with the best wrestler at 155. What can Melendez do that those guys couldn't? NOTHING. And by the way, Edgar beat Penn who was the clear, undisputed best fighter at 155 when they met. Melendez has beaten a guy that was even a clear top 5.
What does that have to do with what I said? Maynard is a better wrestler than Melendez, which is one of his biggest strengths.
Its bad to bring it up, but that is why you dont pick fights well. I know the prediction contest is all fun and games, but it really shows you that you are limited in picking who can beat who.
Well, I am a huge fan of the BJJ taught in that camp. Those guys are among the best. But the truth is, Melendez has never demonstrated an ability to use offensive BJJ in the MMA arena. The guy has never submitted anyone. Again, rolling with the Diaz brothers and Shields is about the best BJJ training a fighter can get. And Melendez isn't a bad grappler at all.
Well, I figured you would have to run there sooner or later. Again, that is a contest. Often you have to make picks to make up ground that go against what you really think. The perfect example was Shields-GSP. My article on the homepage clearly expressed that I didn't give Shields much of a chance. But I picked him anyway because the majority would go the other direction. But I figured you'd run there and dodge the question. How does Melendez beat Edgar? Standing and boxing or trying to out wrestle a D-1 wrestler.?
Maynard isnt nearly as good at standup as melendez and he had him hurt bad. I see Melendez hurting him. But melendez has better GNP than Maynard. He is a much better finisher. I see him punishing edgar after dropping him and the fight being stopped in the 3rd.
Although he just seems like a bad style matchup for Blowjob, Edgar is legit. Styles or no styles, beating Blowjob and getting a draw against Maynard is no joke. I would probably pick Edgar over Melendez too. BJ and Maynard are much better than anyone Melendez has faced.
You seriously diminishing Miller? And back then, Franca and Griffin were legit. You can do the same thing with Melendez's ledger.
In order for Anthony's scenario to work, Melendez would have to catch Edgar with a shot like Maynard did. Keep in mind that other solid strikers like Penn, Sherk, and Fisher never did. I think relying on Melendez to land a big shot is what I'd call a punchers chance.
I will see at weigh in. right now im leaning towards Maynard. But i heard that he injured his rib in training from a guy i roll with. Lets see.
Well, wait a second. You've been railing for hours now about how P4P is about who could beat who. Yet I don't see Maynard anywhere on your top 10 list and you expect him to beat the number 8 guy on your list at the same exact weight. So I guess it's about more than just 'who beats who'.. Thanks for that.
It doesnt carry all the weight, but it carries some. When you add in that he has hung in there with great fighters and is champ. It means something. I think Maynard might be able to win. Im not sure yet. him winning would put him on the list.
You realize you're contradicting yourself and talking in circles, right? You just touched on the exact reasons I mentioned for having Edgar ahead of Melendez. But when I used that reason you said "It's not about resume, it's about who can beat who" Crazy.. But the bottom line is I tried to convince you to move Melendez down a few notches and I lost. Oh well.
