Would you have more respect for Shane if he tried then quit?

To some people quitting is like the worst thing ever, but what if he pulled a Morales against Pacquiao?

What if he tried his best, then when he started to get bashed and realised he couldn't win, just quit instead of getting beaten up or KO'd?

    I would have preferred that.

What he did last night was akin to quitting, because he didn't turn up to win, he more or less quit as soon as he entered the ring without even trying.

Yes. I've always said I find tacit quitting the only really objectionable kind because it's disingenuous. I'd rather he went hell for leather for 4 rounds and quit on his stool the moment he realized he couldn't win. That takes the bravery of honesty.

    I was shocked at Mosely.

I've always thought of him as a warrior, he didn't even attempt to win.

TBH, he pulled a fairly similar trick for 22 rounds against Vernon Forrest. Nobody likes the thought of getting KO'd but I think Mosley's ego/confidence might be tied up in not getting KO'd more than most.

Shane quit alright. At least some quitters try to win before they quit.

It's like we were telling Sly in a MM thread about Zab.

Quitting mentally or turning up to survive is still quitting.

I agree about the honesty thing.

At some point a boxer knows they're not going to win, they're not even going to try to win, so why stay in there pretending to fight? Might as well just retire on your stool.

I guess the point of the thread bigdawg is that Shane DID quit. He turned up without trying to win, that's quitting.

I'm surprised and disappointed. I thought Shane was more of a warrior too, than to just do his best impersonation of a limp lettuce in a fight like this.

Here's the deal. Shane realized that he didn't have it. Hell he knew he didn't have it after the PBF. But we all know why Shane was fighting. Dude needs the lute. That being said he had chances to land punches when he was boxing. He just can't pull the trigger. Perhaps he thought he could but he couldn't. So he fought extremely cautiously. I'm not gonna hate on the man for fighting defensively. I would have rather seen him go out on his shield and I would rather see him fight defensively then throw up his hands and quit. Yea ya'll can call it retire but all retire means is quitting in my eyes. By the way all the damn glove touching is fucking old! I'll Holla 5000

If Shane had let it all hang out then quit through exhaustion, people would have said he was a quitter and that he should have fought smarter.

So lemme ask a question. If a guy goes for broke after the first round and is tired as fuck. Should he be allowed to just quit on his stool because he went for broke and couldn't accomplish his goal. Would that be acceptable? I'll Holla 5000

I'd have more respect for him if he pulled a Morales. Morales TRIED to win. When he realized that he couldn't and would only continue to get battered he winked at the corner. That's better than never having given it his all..which is what Shane did last night and WASTED MY FUCKING MONEY!!

Exactly, that's it in a nutshell.

If that was Shane's gameplan, he shouldn't have fucking agreed to this fight in the first place.

I've always liked Shane, but I find it hard to sympathise with such a pathetic performance and gameplan that basically involves robbing everyone of their money and enjoyment.

EXACTLY. Morales is the ultimate modern warrior. The guy'll try every adjustment and take every chance needed to try and win a fight. And if he realizes he can't he'll quit openly & honestly.

    War Morales!

    word.

With Pac-Morales 3 it was basically Lightweight version of Hagler-Hearns until Morales realized he couldn't win. I've never criticized Morales for that. We all got our money's worth in that one.

Morales = BIGGER BALLS than Shane.

No difference. Both lead to the same result eventually. It would have made for a more entertaining fight, but that is not something Mosley should really care about. He did his job, rest is our problem

This would be valid if guys like Morales and Arce didn't give it their all.

To tell you how little I thought of Shane's performance, I went to bed after the sixth round. I knew nothing would happen in the rest of the fight. It was a gutless showing by Shane. I thought he would try and quit between rounds later in the fight. I'm disapointed, I thought Shane was a warrior, he isn't anymore. Time to hang them up.

In the grand scheme of things it's rather obvious that it doesn't make any difference. That's why MWS asked for OUR opinion of Shane's attitude in the fight. But thanks anyway, captain obvious.

It's as different as can be. Approach 1, the fighter has a chance of winning and we get to know for sure who wins when both guys try their best. That's why we buy fights. The fighter shows integrity and honesty. Approach 2, neither applies and everyone is cheated.

Nah, I expected what we got. But I had hoped he would try; aka pursue the only strategy that gave him any shot of winning.
