He's really slowed down and become gunshy. He either carried mosley, or he just can't pull the trigger. Since I dont see why he would carry mosley, he should get out while the gettings good.
Maybe you can cite the distractions of being Manny Pacqiao, being a congressmen, and of course a definite lack of hunger, but I really think he carried Mosely. Out of respect, and because he doesn't have the same killer instinct and mean streak to beat up someone who clearly doesn't want it.
I think respect for Shane and a lack of hunger played a part but Mosley appeared to come just not to get knocked out. Mosley just didn't offer up any resistance (and therefore openings) so Pacquiao was content with the way things were going. Could Manny have done more? Sure, but he would have had to fight really stupidly and chase Shane around winging power shots. Pacquiao came to fight, Shane didn't.
Slowed down and become gunshy? Nah. He's as fast as ever, and not gunshy, he literally got suckered into a sparring session. He could have turned the heat up with minimal risk IMO, and stopped Mosley, but I really think all the buddy buddy stuff and glove touching got to him and he just settled for some sparring. Gunshy is the wrong word, but I do think he's lost some of his ultra violent streak. The Pacquiao of a few years ago would have dished out a beating and not settled for some friendly sparring.
This too. We've seen it many times in boxing. It's hard to look good when the other guy literally doesn't want to fight.
He's not as fast as you like to believe, MWS. He combines plus handspeed with plus footspeed extremely well, but his hands are not lightning. As for the Mosely fight, he just decided to win easy and didn't go for the kayo until Mosley had no chance to get lucky. I don't see that as slipping or anything else, he just had a guy willing to give him a pretty easy win and he took it. We didn't get to see his unnatural stamina in action because he didn't have to show it to us.
It's you that's in the minority as far as rating his speed. As far as overall speed, handspeed and footspeed combined, he's probably the fastest fighter in boxing. He's also faster than Floyd.
Manny's handspeed is clearly faster than the speed that any fighter can deal with. He still has this moments where his combinations are coming out faster than the other guy can even shift his body. Faster than Floyd, certainly. I think Floyd had a footspeed advantage earlier in his career but now, with age I'm not so sure.
Not so sure? :: People have a weird view on Floyd, it's like they are still imagining he is the blazing fast 130 pound Floyd. Honestly, the difference in footspeed now is greater than handspeed. At 147 Floyd has slowed down a lot. He's much less mobile and much slower on his feet, he just stays in the pocket, pot shots, counters etc rather than boxes and moves these days. Still highly effective, just different. Like whiskey says though, something Floyd has other than just raw velocity that contributes to him being a FAST fighter is reaction speed. As far as raw velocity, Pacquiao wins, clearly, but as far as overall offensive and defensive reactions, Floyd still has the best in boxing.
Pacquiao CARRIED Shane More than Anything... Despite his Aggression & Ferocity, Manny's ALWAYS Exhibited Good SPORTSMANSHIP...REED Wishes Manny would've just CLOCKED Shane During 1 of the 15-20 Glove Touches or Simply REFUSED to Reciprocate the Gesture, but he's NOT that Type of Dude...Never has Been... Shane Went Above & Beyond, Appealing for MERCY & it WORKED... Manny's a POLITICIAN, a WORLD Figure, THE SHIT in his Homeland, Wealthy BEYOND his Wildest Dreams...It's Only NATURAL that his Killer Instinct would DISSIPATE a Bit...Manny STILL Fought Relatively HARD & he Got PISSED when that Knockdown was Incorrectly Ruled Against him, but Shane Fought Sooooo MEEKLY & had Been Soooooo CORDIAL w/Manny During the Build-Up, that Manny Carried him...He Carried Margarita Too, the Last Round or So... REED Certainly Doesn't WANT Manny Pacquiao to Retire...He Should Make 1 Last Genuine Effort to Make the Floyd Fight Happen, but if Floyd Drops the Ball Yet AGAIN, REED Wouldn't Blame Manny @ All if he Retired... REED:hammert:
Good post. Despite being an incredibly violent fighter, Manny has always shown good sportsmanship and respect. And at the age he is now, I guess it's not that surprising that some of his violent streak has dissipated a bit. Then of course Mosley went ALL OUT to be as buddyish as possible, and the result is as we saw, a friendly sparring session. It was incredibly annoying, but you could see how it happened and ultimately it was Shane who wanted that sparring session.
That's what I mean. Now that Floyd is old and inactive his footspeed isn't really that prolific anymore. His last two fights displayed that. However, I don't think of only the 130lb Floyd when I think of blazing footspeed. I think even the Floyd that, for example fought Henry Bruseles is at least comparable to Pacquiao's footspeed. And of course in terms of reaction speed, Floyd is superior. Handspeed however, at no point do I think Floyd was greater than Pacquiao.
EXTREMELY Annoying... In Shane's Defense, he's ALWAYS Been what REED Calls a "Serial Glove Toucher", Even when he's Beating the Shit Out of Guys...But There's Been Several OTHER Times when it Made Shane Look MEEK (1st Forrest Fight, 1st Winky Fight, Floyd Fight)...Damn Near SOFT...w/a MINIMUM Guarantee of 5 MILLION Dollars (on Shane's Behalf), REED @ Least Wants the Fighters to ACT like Arch Enemies for 12 Rounds...@ the End of the Day, it's Supposed to B a Fucking FIGHT...ARGUABLY, there were More GLOVE TOUCHES than FLUSHLY Landed Shots... Sure, Manny Bought Into Shane's PLEA for MERCY, but REED Places 95-99% of the Blame SQUARELY on Shane... REED:hammert:
Its hard to look good against someone who runs. Shane ran like manny had ebola in his gloves. However Manny's footspeed was slower from the start, he wasn't his energetic self, giving almost no angles in large stretches of the fight. Floyd fights like a track athlete with actual offense, so if the same Pac shows up, he's in for a long night. Although with Floyd being out so long maybe some of his crispness will fade as well. But fuck Floyd, if I'm manny, I did plenty to make the fight happen, and I've fought EVERYONE. If I'm him i get the fuck out while he has a legion of fans and political considerations at home.
JMM is too small on what basis? He could and should have fought JMM at 135 instead of David Diaz or fought against Juan Diaz there. Ortiz is coming off an impressive win. Bradley is on a good streak. The excuse that their is nobody to fight is weak.
I agree with this post 100% I hate boxers touching gloves all the time like they're friends sparring. In that ring you're supposed to be enemies until the fight ends. Shane was doing it to appease Manny and make sure Pacquiao had mercy on him. Manny did indeed buy into it a bit.
Touching gloves after the knockdown was one of the most bizare things i have ever seen. That wouldn't have looked good to casual viewers.
Yeah, and credit to Shane for making it happen in that case. All the others were over the top though.
Manny touched gloves after the real kd. I remember when Shane wanted to touch gloves with Floyd and Floyd said lets fight and punched him in the mouth ::
Pac hasn't slowed down he just fought a fighter who ran, held and has good hand speed. usually his guys are right in front of him.
Yes but we are talking about now. PAC isn't dropping past 140 anymore and I think JMM is adversely affected at a higher weight. Ortiz is fighting Floyd isn't he? That's him out of the picture. So Bradley then?
